That's not entirely true. Iirc it was Hashirama that wanted Madara to become Hokagr but Hashirama was favoured by all. As far as I remember Madara's main reason was that he predicted Tobirama would inevitably become Hokage and fuck the Uchiha clan over which lead him to the conclusion that true peace between Uchiha and Senju can't be achieved through cooperation (he calls it quite form of conflict iirc).

But I still think at some level, he was just being a bitter loser, now that he lost his actual conflict to Hashirama, he couldn't stand losing the *political* conflict to him.
