Garling won't be beaten nor Oda would make him look bad in a flashback.
This character is one of the guys that is still save up for later, most probably EOS fight, and his portrayal is already like #2 next to Imu among WG.
If anything he will look good and strong in the flashback so even the most casual readers can tell the guy is a big deal the next time he/she saw him in the current timeline.
Out of all the SBS questions that Oda could ignore, he chose to answer a fan asking what's Garling power and what role he has in GV.

Most likely Dragon main opponent in the EOS war, while Goofy fight Imu.

At this point it’s hard to imagine what Rocks could actually do that would make him more evil than the CDs. Because they were actively engaging in a genocide.
I suppose if there was an AW in God Valley, maybe Rocks could be more evil if he tried sinking Mariegeose, as that would also destroy Fishman island and kill every slave in MJ?
Honestly, it just makes more sense that Garp was given direct orders to kill Rocks and Roger is simply retarded.

Tac, if there's a Gorosei present they're obviously going to end up fighting one of the captains lol. Saturn will obviously end up fighting Rocks or Roger. It helps build to his character of having seen everything before. He has seen Rocks and Roger in action, so he wasn't really tripping about Egghead. He even tells Luffy, he was interested in what fate has for him if he escapes. Maybe based on his experience seeing Roger escape GV and becoming important.
Also btw, do you think this chapter is portraying sommers as the strongest GK after Gunko and Garling?

Let's be honest here. It wouldn't make sense for this to be Roger when
1. WB and Roger ends in good terms
2. WB called Roger by his name in that same chapter
3. Shanks face? What about it? What are the chances that there was another character with the same face (Garling) in the past.

I mean, it makes even less sense if this is about Teach solely. He was a baby, why did they need to wait two years to literally play a game to kill him anyway? Why not send cipher pol to assassinate? Why not literally do anything else but make a huge commotion over making his lineage public?

So yes, I think this goes more than just Davy lineage because waiting 2 years for that makes no sense. Waiting 2 years to host the rabbit hunt under the guise that they eliminate all witnesses to unearth an ancient weapon makes far more sense to me.
