Yep it was disappointing but Oda likes classic tropes and story tools. Still he should have given a solid explication of how Denjiro managed to change his appearance that much.

You guys it's fine. You are making this more complicated than it has to be

Zoro can just not fight king at all and that's the end of that.

The only thing that's a must is that Zoro fights the second strongest who is usually a swordsman in a 1v1 and he wins.

Oda can just write some nonsense around this if Zoro can't beat king. He can like have king defeated by like a Yonkou or admiral or whatever Before Zoro runs into him or king is revealed to not be the second strongest or in a GIGANTIC TWIST, Smoothie turns up and is an actual contender or whatever

The plot will decide the outcome as it always does and if there's no way in hell Zoro can win, there's no way Zoro will lose either so the plot will adjust accordingly
