Whitebeard's rule is not letting his crewmate die in which what he did when he and his crew attempted to save Ace. Oden's case on the other hand is vengeance. It means the crewmate is already dead and he will not return back to life even if you avenge him. You will just create casualties for the dead and that is Whitebeard's perspective that's why it was mentioned that they weren't able to do anything because Oden died for years already before they find out that a crew member of theirs was harmed.

He's the one who inherited Oden's will
He also likely has a connection the Shimotsukis
He will be the samurai that Kaido is waiting for
He will be the most relevant character against Kaido outside of Luffy
