Based on the outcome, it seemed more that Yamato meant she lost the fight more out of will and Ace winning her over than just a purely physical confrontation.
This episode was much much much better than the flashback it actually adapted.
There actually being a character arc for Yamato, focusing on her actually overcoming the mindset that binds her in her fight with Ace as opposed to just overcoming it on a whim like she did in the manga.
A massive improvement to her flashback and character from the manga.
-The scene of her declaring her dream was adapted in a weird way, in the manga and in the "we are one" video it was a nice scene with her posing with the destroyed statue behind her , they even have the scene in the openig but then changed it in the actual episode for no reason
They gave it to actually give Yamato some kind of character arc that Ace helped her with as opposed to her just doing it on a whim. It does a better job solidifying their friendship as well. As opposed to just mutually hating Kaido, Yamato's friendship to Ace is grounded in her gratitude to him for showing her how Kaido was chaining her heart, which wasn't terribly explored in the manga. They even elaborated on Yamato's desire to grow strong, which sort of doesn't go anywhere in the manga.
Did they just try to draw some parallels between Zoro and Ace in the next episode preview?
Yamato said she lost to Ace, wow. We thought it was a draw according to the manga.
Can we talk about subjects that have happened in the manga and not in the anime here too or are they considered spoilers and strictly restricted to the manga section?
I think Yamato didn't mean that literally. They drawed in the actual battle, but Ace "defeated her" with his compassion, which metaphorically defeated the mindset that Yamato had resigned herself to.
