Rayleigh doesn't need his sword to save Pre-TS Zolo from Kizaru.
Rayleigh (he admits he was lucky) directly goes his sword vs. Blackbeard, who was dealing with Hancock + Haki user Kuja warriors + Koby.
And don't forget that BB haters were saying BB has disadvantage against Non-DF user swordsman like Rayleigh, and all of those Haki user Kuja warriors were desperate vs. Blackbeard.
Rayleigh can detect the power levels easily via CoO Haki:
He says ''they'' (Rayleigh + Hancock + Kuja warriors) were LUCKY vs. Blackbeard, and they couldn't win.
While Sentomaru says Kizaru couldn't defeat Rayleigh ALONE. (without Hancock's or Kuja warriors help).

Aside from the simple fact that Teach willingly picked a fight with a stronger force than old Rayleigh like the Revolutionary Army and laid waste to their HQ forcing them to retreat elsewhere, it's extremely obvious at this point that Oda intends to have Teach just one step ahead of Luffy without inserting a humongous gap between the two.
When Luffy got 1.5 billion > Teach's bounty was revealed at 2.2 billion
When Luffy got 3 billion > Teach got 3.9 first time he's shown back again.
He's the only original emperor who's still growing and developing throughout the story, and yet despite that at his current strength:
