I’ve seen some suggest before that Mihawk was “wasting his free time,” or “killing time” in a way that implies that he had things to do before and/or after his attack on Krieg! The headcanon possibilities…

It could be that Mihawk decided to have some leisure time and he sealed to search a swordsman to challenge, but eventually he ended up to fulfill his duty as warlord, which is crush minor pirates .
Hence why he said that he is wasting his free time, he is doing his job out of boredom rather than truly enjoying his spare time

Honestly, the theory of koshiro holding the WGS title is very popular. But it also raises several questions considering oden and Rayleigh were still relatively around. I mean, I always wondered if he was the wgs, wouldn't people come searching?

That’s a pretty wild theory, lol. I honestly always thought Koshiro was just some fodder until we found out about his Wano roots. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was the strongest guy in East Blue (when top tiers aren’t there for a visit at least)

i personally thought for a long time that Koshiro was the WSS. Because he looks weak and the trope of « the seemingly weak guy who turns out to be a beast » is a common trope.
But my view change since it was reveal that Roger was a swordsman.

I personally never thought of Koshiro as anything more than a East Blue Fodder. His Shimotsuki origin is interesting but nowhere near WSS level. As far as I am concerned, he is of no importance whatsoever.

Zoro wanted to be WSS before meeting Koshiro, so whoever that inspired Zoro to be the WSS is rather more important.

I noticed something: Luffy wanted to be a pirate before meeting Shanks and Zoro wanted to be WSS before meeting Koshiro/Kuina. So, we still don't know who inspired them. Or am I missing something?!!

In the manga, his flashback starts with him losing his 2000th duel to Kuina, and he says then that he wants to be WSS immediately afterwards. We don’t know if he was born in Shimotsuki village or just wandered in like the anime. Or if he was dropped off for safe keeping as a baby.

I was under the impression that the anime filler in that regard was made as per Oda's instructions.

The only “anime filler” that is considered canon that I’m familiar with is the stuff with Usopp and Daddy Masterson in Loguetown. Haven’t heard anything about Zoro’s intro being expanded upon with Oda’s approval.

Oh! I thought that every filler till the end of Loguetown was approved by Oda. I didn't realize that only that part was approved by Oda.

But I think I remember now. Oda wanted to extend Loguetown with Masterson and so on. But editors pressured him to have the Straw hats reach Grand Line in Ch. 100. So, Oda has anime team fill in those non-chapters. Is that right?

Yeah, from what I read that’s what happened. I think that’s where Usopp gets his goggles, which just mysteriously appear in the manga lol
