We don’t know how someone turns a sword black. When Gyukimaru recounted Ryuma’s story, he said Shusui eventually became black not that many battles required it.
I do agree, though that Zoro should blacken his longest, most cherished sword first. It’d be both a nice play on expectations, and more impactful.
