Now, wedon't know for sure if Zoro is Ushimaru's descendant or if his relation to Ryuma is through a different Shimotsuki line.
But if he's indeed Ushimaru's son I could see this:
Ushimaru sent his pregnant wife to the immigrant community in East Blue to make sure they are safe and the bloodline is preserved.
Then Zoro's mom gives birth to him in Shimotsuki village. We don't know if he's an orphan or if his mother just isn't mentioned in Zoro's relatively short flashback. but if yes, his mom might have died during childbirth.
