Anyone who isn't a hater can see Mihawk was Whitebeard's parallel.
Shanks/Mihawk is Roger/Whitebeard 2.0. Friendly rivals who are as close one can be to each other in power level, who have drinks with each other.
Extrapolating from Shanks/Mihawk to Luffy/Zoro isn't hard.
It's obvious Rayleigh is a parallel for Zoro, that doesn't exclude others from being parallels to Zoro either. Characters can have multiple portrayals, and can share portrayal even. Both Luffy and Zoro got paralleled with Oden and Ryuma in the same arc.
I say Luffy is the Roger who recruited his Whitebeard. If anything, the idea is at least something worth to ponder over, but agenda makes readers freak out at even the suggestion.

- Whitebeard (debatable)
- Rayleigh
- Mihawk
- Ben Beckman
- Killer
- Loki (debatable)
