Anyway, pirates do technically fall up the swordsman definition since they weild blades. However you wont catch a pirate outpacing a Samurai in a fight irl and even in this series. Big Mom doesnt have skill with her swings lol.
Maybe instead of classifying everyone as swordsman. People should just add more classes.
Pirates are good marksmen, they also weild cutlasses and they also fight h2h. Pirates use cutlasses specifically because having one makes it easier to fight against other people who are wielding weapons. Not because of some swordsman code or that they consider themselves the skilled at the sword craft. Most pirates back then weren't even that good outside of the few that started out in the navy and had that military training.
There's a reason why the only ones that have black blades in this verse are Mihawk, Ryuma and soon to be Zoro.
Law standardly relies on a sword and uses it also as an extension of his DF ability, e.g. to dismantle people both harmlessly and as an attack. He has a very dominant DF, so it makes sense that he doesn't focus exclusively on his sword or that the sword skills and pure sword "powa" don't take all the spot-light. But it's an integral part of him. Especially in the beginning he attacked Doffy with it (was deflected) and sliced, and then half-killed, his Snail mentor-guy with it.
I think one can work very well with Oda saying Law is a swordsman. It changes nothing.

The Ama no Murakumo is an actual named Blade in Japan, Borsalino literally conjures a Sword and is capable of fighting with it for a period of time, the fact Borsalino even names it is a testament to his Swordsmanship.
We haven't gotten any other 1 on 1 fights with Borsalino besides his match with Rayleigh. Since Borsalino was actually cut by Rayleigh we know that him being serious is with his swordsmanship.
I don't think Kuzans single attack is comparable for the following :
1. Kuzan himself is not holding the spears but creates multiple spears around him and launches them
2. This attack is only done once it is not similar to how Whitebeard or Enel fight with their staffs/polearms.

Yes, if you beat WSM and WSC you become WSM and WSC because you literally have beaten them.
That means Mihawk's sword skill can be matched by people like Vista, other stats not. Sword skill matters the least.
