Always pointing fingers to rationalize this.
- I've never said I liked Shanks, but Mihawk fans start arguments with me for even mentioning him, and then blame me for them starting arguments.
I never said you like Shanks either. But my bad then. I now see that you were talking about your own experiences getting piled on, and not calling Mihawk fans toxic in general. I've seen similar aggression from both sides, so I just pointed out a possible cause-and-effect pattern. But in your case, I agree that is uncalled for. No one should get swarmed just for mentioning a character neutrally.
I don't like Mihawk fans, not because Mihawk is a bad character, but because Mihawk fans are usually just here to be hypercritical and aura farm. They represent an undesirable part of the fandom, and in-fact they display anti-fan behavior frequently.
Am I demonizing them? No, they demonized themselves. They wanted the attention, it's just negative attention.
It's funny because me, as a good character enjoyer, i like Shanks way more but why wouldn't i recognize Mihawk as the WSS (until disputed in the future)?
Lemme make another example, using Elden Ring DLC, Shadows of The Erdtree and Elden Ring Nightreign as an example.
Messmer is a way better boss than Promised Consort Radahn, sure, not as tough to beat but way better.
The same goes to Heolstor the Nightlord vs the Dreglord Straghess, Nightlord is a way better boss, from the design, to the music, to the attacks than the more difficult rotten mass of wtf.

Me: "Oh, like you really enjoyed the chapter? Or like actual magic with the hammer? Or like something happened that shouldn't have been able to happen and you wanna criticise it?"
The powerful swordsman Shanks used to fight using both of his hands
It makes sense why Mihawk lost interest in him as a rival.
Gaban says most don't make it to the top
Mihawk, on the other hand, is so powerful that he achieved it; he is at the top of the world, which is why he is the most powerful swordsman in the world.
The Mihawk vs Shanks argument, i'm on Mihawk's side on the strength part.
For example, when a Shanks stan says "Duh, but Mihawk didn't defeat Vista" and use the "let's postpone" take as an argument to why Mihawk is weaker, i can just remember Shanks getting verbally washed by Mihawk in front of his entire crew, proceeding to pour Mihawk drink a moment later.
Shanks deserved more than being just a simple Yonko... he was the genius of Roger's crew, he learned Kamusari at a young age, and he was clearly destined for more. Gaban himself says so when he calls him a child of destiny

Yeah buts its clear he understands his role, whatever that is. That much is understood now that we know the DF Luffy at was purposeful or even intended for Ace. There's a direct sequence of events that played out here in order for Luffy to eventually be successful as PK.

Shanks became the same as Buggy... Buggy knew about Shanks' potential and that he could reach the top, so he gave up on all his dreams to follow him
The mighty swordsman Shanks, who held legendary duels with the world's strongest swordsman and was even admired by the world's strongest man, gave up on his dreams of reaching the top........
The top is destined for the most powerful in the world; Gaban himself explains it
Mihawk never gave up on his dreams and was able to reach the top of the world.
