By ass I mean selfish. He understands the evil of the CDs and chooses to work to strengthen their influence so long as he personally doesn’t have to do the CDs bidding. The God Valley incident is the perfect example, Garp knew what was going on and he didn’t give a shit until his personal rival showed up.

Well worstgen is a unique forum, it's a One Piece forum and yet it's members on average hate One Piece more than any other manga, but worstgen members aren't even 0.001% of all One Piece fans.
Kaido had a short backstory, that doesn't mean it didn't explain anything, in fact it very precisely showed why Kaido values strength and power above anything else, you act like the only way to understand Kaido as a character is if you have 50 pages of the narrator talking about Kaido.

I can understand trying to defend Kaido in terms of power level arguments, but when it comes to actual character writing and being a good villain, that is a whole different story.
I've seen some heavily defend Kaido when it comes to power level, but at the same time still acknowledge how badly written Kaido was.

Like do yourselves a favor and read Doffy’s backstory. Not even include Law, just the portion that’s dedicated to him. It’s only like 5 pages long but it tells us a lot about him

Kaido and Big Mom were not well written villains. Hell they genuinely didn’t even feel like they were planned based on how disappointing both were.
The best written yonko are buggy and Blackbeard. Those two have still been some of odas best work and I’m sure shanks still also be up there once oda gives him more focus. Just knowing shanks is living a life he didn’t want is interesting so hopefully Oda expands more on that.
