Character Discussion What is Kuzan's Game now?

#82
Smoker & Koby are both bums.
Neither are even touching Kuzan.

Kuzan deserves more than that.
Really then the only option is Luffy or just no one but BB betraying him, because Zoro has a clear matchup and Sanji likely is paralleled with Laffite or Pizarro.

I wouldnt give up on the Smoker idea. Law lost to Doflamingo and had to double team Vergo on PH. Then he went and beat a Yonko with Kid. Glowups happen quickly in this series and Smoker having awakening and plot armor helps lol

Glow up is happening for sure. But not to Smoker.
To the new hero
The future of the marines
Garps beloved student

If kuzan beats garp now he himself has set up vs koby

Hmm, maybe. Id say both are possible because Smoker and Aokiji actually are friends and their dialogue at PH can be interpreted as Smoker potentially doing the same thing with Luffy.

Theres narrative purpose for both imo. I guess we'll see whos relevant by the time Luffy fights Blackbeard.

Smoker & Koby are both too weak to fight solo, so they pull a Kid/Law/Bombs/Plot Armor tag team
Honestly works for me lmao

Feeling like he is going down the same rabbit hole as Rob Lucci. Starting to question things, wanting answers, wanting to witness the whole conclusion of this century long ongoing conflict, where the Ohara incident or whatever incident have been parts of.

Slowly more and more characters become awake to how the world situation really is. Kuzan is definitely learning the ways of freedom from the Blackbeard Pirates, something that has been taken away from the Oharan people, especially from Nico Robin aslong she is on duty. This is where his redemption arc might lead us and I would love that so much.

Wasn't expecting the direction his character's taking in that he's more of a wildcard than I thought. While secret marine is not off the table is seems less likely. It would appear he's more friendly with Blackbeard than I thought but that could just be an act.

One Piece has always been about people's dreams but also having the ambition to make those dreams come true. So is Kuzan acting more on ambition or is he actually pursuing a dream?

Ohara's incident happened 22 years ago and he's still mumbling about the eyes of a traumatized little girl while drunk lol
Even I have no idea where Kuzan's character is heading, I'm sure of one thing; no way he's going to seriously fight against the straw hats, where Robin finally found her place to be happy.

Seeing all those old panels really reassures that this man is definitely not a bad guy lol.
The "I'm still me" to Smoker was already pretty much confirmation considering he was a member for over a year at that point.

One thing ; I’m not certain Kuzan immediately became a member one year ago, he must have given a lot of thoughts to it. Flashback simply show him and Blackbeard first meeting.

I say that because it would make Jinbe, Smoker having no idea and Doffy only rumors on what was he up to an even bigger plothole than it already is. Also Burgess randomly discussing about trusting Kuzan a whole year after he joined? I get Oda can make mistakes but still:giogio:

Kuzan joining the Revolutionary Army would be a good way to learn history but I think he knows that he won't have too much freedom/limited resources to achieve his goal. So Blackbeard Pirates is a better choice due to how mobile and fast they are at doing things.

Oda just saved himself from Gatz saying that the 10 captains are world renowned, he definitely planned different during PH.

But then in 957 you have Bradnew (when he was used as emperors hype man) saying Blackbeard gained mighty followers when he invaded Impel Down 2 years ago but absolutely nothing about him having a former admiral who had 10 days fight the fleet admiral who negged three of these followers lol in his ranks
I loved the interactions with Kuzan this chapter but timeline really bothering me lol.

Don't look too much into it imo. Oda sometimes changes things even when certain scenes look off then

I really do believe Akainu and Kuzan may be working together and this is an operation that only the two of em cooked up on their own.
It feels like the first thing Kuzan did when meeting the BBP's was showing his dislike for Akainu and what he did to him. We also got very interesting bits of dialogue that Akainu regrets going into battle with a comrade + he spared him. That has always bugged me for someone like Akainu.

Having his comrade go through the disgrace of being saved by his oponnents mercy, it doesn't feel like something a Marine like Akainu would do.

I believe it isn't impossible that the two may be secretly working together, but i personally prefer the idea presented here that Kuzan is not aligned with anyone and actually just has his own motives to act like the way he does.
I said this many times.

I don't mind it although add some substance to it.

If Akainu and Aokiji came up with this and Kuzan is just a plain spy, that is a bit boring troupe.

Yeah I guess. Oda wanted to keep the mystery so he didn’t care about how some scenes would look in retrospective. Even Kuzan’s aesthetic. Til the reveal in the cover story he had his « lone wanderer » (like in your pfp) look instead of the BB pirates aesthetic like now.

Kuzan was a broken man; it is interesting to notice that he's, as far as I recall, the only admiral whose justice changed: he used to defend a burning justice but after Ohara he changed to the lazy justice we all knew. This passive approach to life was stressed by Jinbe when he explained that Sakazuki and Kuzan fought to become Fleet Admiral: he said Kuzan rarely showed any motivation for anything but didn't want Sakazuki to become the Fleet Admiral, which is interesting because didn't sound like Kuzan wanted the position for himself but simply didn't want the psychopath he witnessed at Ohara to rule the Marines. Is a reactive approach that, again, fits the profile of a broken man that simply exists as a passive observer of the world —in this case, Kuzan acted out of reactivity, not proactivity. Hadn't been for Sakazuki being nominated I doubt he'd have went for the position.

When Blackbeard met him at the bar, Kuzan again emphasized how broken he was and mumbled about Saul, Robin and Ohara. This is clearly the key for his game: as of now he isn't a lost man but has a goal, a determination (as noticed by Doflamingo), and this determination should be related to understanding what happened in Ohara, why he had to "murder" his friend and what justified Sakazuki to annihilate civilians like that. In other words: he needs to make sense of what broke him in the first place, and that must be why he allied himself with the D. who is into archaeology and who offered him a vehicle to seek his own agenda.
