Character Discussion What's your Thoughs on Shanks's Character?

#28
Hmm I like the concept behind the character, but feel there's not much character to him really.
In my opinion he suffers from being a cameo character that got introduced in the very first chapter. From that very moment he was established to fit a certain mold and, in subsequent hanful appearances, couldn't really showcase much depth.
The most interesting thing I personally saw from him was his declaration to go for the One Piece.

In the end, I mostly like him. His hype moments are really hype, has a cool design and crew, and is guaranteed to play a major role.

@Monster Zoro's Tesla Supplier since you're the only one that didn't post shitpost, how do you feel about the effect Shanks has in the plot and the fandom?
Right now he just feels like fanservice.
He looks good, is only seen doing good things, and iirc we never even see one drop of blood be drawn from him.
He just feels like a gary stu right now.
But I think that he could easily become more nuanced and complex if we get a flashback of him and his life with Roger, and see how he feels about the CDs, I mean he must have some history with them since his twin and father are both very high ranking CDs.
And when and why did he fight Blackbeard? Why did Roger see so much potential in him specifically?
Lot of things I wanna see.

He’s a Mary Sue character like Itachi Uchiha. Sucked off by author so hard you’d think he’s a self-insert and can do no wrong even when he does something wrong. Forced likability. Never enjoyed Mary Sues

This is not him that’s his better older twin[/QUOTE]
Itachi did Bad stuff to the good guys and belonged to an Evil group

Some stuff isnt so mysterious
Roger saw potential in him bc they spent time together and he saw him fighting
He faced Blackbeard bc their captains were enemies and they continued their pirate career later

Shanks was amazing pre TS one of my most favourite characters. I even glazed himself myself a lot here in the FC despite being "his biggest hater" apparently and idolised him for MANY years.
He was amazingly written in regards to Luffy, his actions and words towards him, extremely powerful, inspiring, emotional and wise stuff that really showcases mature, positive masculinity and adulthood and even fatherhood too.

But like a lot of characters post Total Shittification, he's a parody of himself and turned into the most egregious self insert, fan fiction, more glazing than a Donut factory (RIP Ace) behemoth of a character ive ever seen.

Like Odas equivalent of Itachi or Erza but with far less screentime and far more cowardice.

Current Shanks and Yasopp are so detestable and pretentiously self righteous its laughable and sickening.

Don't even get me started on Sham-rock cop out too. I've tried to be more understanding and open minded, positive about it but truth be told I actually hate this reveal and think it's cowardly and lame of Oda, but not surprising at all. Pretty much a retcon easily.

I do like how Shanks was written with reuniting with and trying to comfort Uta too but that film and the bigger plot holes it causes, character assassinations especially if it were fully canon, instead of just Uta alone is a whole other basket of bullshit to agonise over.

Oda even admitted Shanks wasn't meant to appear at Marineford and Oda has now been implying it wasn't even Shanks who made Kaido back off going to Marineford somehow, even though there's no believable reason for Kaido to back off and thus it might have been or even was Sham-rock.

This is such terrible fanfiction writing that I refuse to believe it's the same person writing the series post TS and especially the past few arcs.
Oda really had to outdo other authors in every way including ruining other characters, arcs, mysteries and his own lore, standards and such.

Sorry but after almost 30 years of this story and a few years into this final saga that was supposed to answer all mysteries and thus shouldn't give us a million more of them, yet we've yet to see pluton and uranus still, urouge, logia awakenings, the void century, gods valley in full etc, I'm getting extremely burned out on this series, like I spent too much time around that mother flame reveal which has nicely been forgotten too like other things.
