Guts is complex simply because of his character arc. Someone's failure following them everywhere in form of a mark isn't a very common anime troupe. Naruto loosing Sasuke is kinda similar to Guts loosing Griffith, but Naruto doesn't get constantly reminded of his failure like Guts is. Guts is a simple man but his character arc is complex.
I dont want to say anything negative about Guts, he is one of my most favorite characters.

I will say its not difficult to follow the chain of thoughts of Guts. He doesnt have a twisted personality. Most of his actions are a direct result of his loyalty towards Griffith or Griffith's betrayal. I dont remember Guts doing something really unexpected or out of the character like nothing happened or bowing down to Mihawk.

Guts suffered way more and thats why most readers have sympathy for him. He has more badass moments. He is more ruthless. But those dont make his character more complex than Zoro in my opinion. Killing Adonis is the most complex conscious decision I can think of from Guts, even then he wasnt aware it was a kid before the strike.

A little shoutout to the future Pirate King. Sure he acts like a kid and goofball 99% of the time (but that's another great side to him), he can mean business when serious, and show why he's not only the Captain of the Strawhats, but a man you don't mess with. As proven against a few people on this very list. As the future king of kings, you'd expect him to be a badass in his own right.

Griffith kinda resembles Abraham from Biblical archetypes as he represents sacrifice. Someone who sacrifices someone most dear to him (Guts) for something he values even more (desire to reach the castle) like Abraham sacrificed Isiah for God's will.

Though the difference is Griffith was showing some reluctance, asking Guts to not touch him while Abraham didn't show reluctance.

Btw I am not a christian.
I am also not a Christian.

Guts is on his own level lmao.
I have only seen Berserk movies but his character archetype is much more complex then Zoro's. He lost something, and his failure follows him everywhere in the form of that scar on his neck and his goal is life is to get over that. While Zoro is a great written character, his archetype is very simple, he is simply the guy with ambition to get stronger strengthened by his child hood and great moral compass,

Oda simply isn't capable of writing a character as complex as guts but Pre TS Zoro is the best work Oda has done. Zoro is on the very top by One Piece standards but Guts' standard is much higher than what One Piece can offer.

@Admiral Lee Hung those movies are really making me wanna start reading Berserk.
Do it ASAP: in the movies you miss a good 70% of the outstanding character development and deepness that the comic and even the 1997 show can offer.
