Character Discussion Why do you like Mihawk?

#13
Mihawk's wank is mostly proxy.

It's only because of Zoro
outdated take

this was more true maybe 5 years ago

and I mean within this community of more "hardcore" fans, who are even bothered to engage in a discord or a forum, not anime only's.

Because lets face it very few are this engaged, most just watch the anime, a smaller amount consume one piece youtube content, and an even smaller amount engage in conversation.

Mihawk intrigues me through his potential.

I tend to stan swordsmen, and Mihawk holds the title of World's Strongest Swordsman. That alone is enough to catch my interest. Mihawk's design is textbook cool and befitting of such stature, but it's his mysterious set of eyes that has led to many theories. Is he of Nerona descent? How does his draft epithet, 'Senrigan' or 'Clairvoyant,' tie into them?

He's written far more subtly than Shanks, who is Oda's self-insert golden boy, complete with all the flashiness that entails. While Mihawk is the silent aura farmer who looms in the background, yet to be fully explored. We have statements from the manga, SBS, and databooks to repeatedly confirm and reiterate that he's that guy. Slander and impatience have led many to doubt his relevance.

But I believe Oda will deliver a good character story for Mihawk because the groundwork is already there. He has done well by all the original Warlords. Some were the main villains of an arc or a small saga. Kuma's backstory, revealed as late as the Egghead Arc, is widely considered to be one of the best in the series. So, the first introduced Warlord will be the last to be fully fleshed out.

We will learn how Mihawk earned his former epithet 'Marine Hunter' and how his distrust of others ties into it. The mystery of Black Blades can be explored through him. We will get an answer to the compelling theories surrounding his parentage. And both Cross Guild and S-Hawk also add to his potential story.

I will be blunt - there is nothing much going for Mihawk to like him.

I did like him in Baratie but after that.... Nothing much at all.

To me, it's all for the sake of Zoro agenda
Pretty cool design.
Made Shanks look like his sidekick back in the day.
Drives people IRL into full-on meltdown mode.
Hawk Eyes – the most iconic visual trait in the series.
Holds the most impressive bounty we’ve seen so far.
Wields the strongest blade in the series.
Travels the Grand Line solo, no crew training wheels.
Has some of the coldest, most quotable lines in the manga.
A literal “Marine Hunter.”
An actual rivalry with Shanks, not some fanfiction “they met once” thing.
Functions as a proxy Yonko without even trying.

There’s plenty to like about him beyond the “Zoro agenda.”

Meanwhile, Shanks is basically the perennial runner-up:
#2 Pirate.
#2 Swordsman.
Mostly just coasts on hype panels without delivering anything concrete.
