Questions & Mysteries Zoro and Sanji are perfect equals

Your argument relies on Zoro never actually trying to compete, yet he has been competing for the entire story.

It doesn't hold up.
There is no contradiction. Zoro competes with swordsman. He fights other pirates to win, not to compete. He hasn't found any interest in objectively winning against Sanji outside from that time they went hunting lol
Zoro is a 10, Sanji is no weaker than 8.5.
If we were talking power I could see it, but Sanji's only just now hinting at his ultimate potential as a combatant. He's held himself back this entire time.

That they're equals by design is obvious to anyone that doesn't make Zoro's superiority a part of their worldview.

The equals narrative benefits Zoro more than it has ever benefitted Sanji.

Sanji has always had superior portrayal against opponents of equal, greater and comparable calibre and status. His signature wins are especially more dominant despite having some kind of nerf in all of them.

Thriller Bark has basically been erased from Zorotard's memories for obvious reasons. Moriah put Zoro's shadow in the body of a legendary samurai and Sanji's shadow in a weak body and what did it look like?

They can't afford to stop and question how and why Sanji's shadow was equal to Zoro's despite his being in a weak body and Zoro's in that of legendary samurai.

90% of the talking points around Sanji are agenda driven and complete nonsense. He's less the popular character and Zoro stans inherently appeals to more to insecure losers that project onto fiction, who feel the need to constantly lie about Sanji. Those lies can stick in people's subconscious, but they can't change what's on the page.

Not really perfect equals, but close enough. Like if Zoro is 100, Sanji is probably 95. Zoro still has the edge over Sanji, but the gap is smaller than die-hard "Zoro is stronger than Luffy" fans would like to admit.
As a Sanji fan, I obviously enjoy his hype moments, but I never delude myself that Sanji > Zoro because the manga consistently follows the M3 dynamics with Luffy fighting the top dog, while Zoro fights #1 underling and Sanji fights #2 underling. Also, Zoro and Sanji themselves recognize each other's strength and trust it.
