To be more precise, Kuina is the cousin to the uncle of Zoro's neighbor's step-niece, twice removed from Arashi's long-lost distant great-grandfather's son-in-law.

That's his standard modus operandi, I wouldn't be bothered about that aspect. It's shitty that the implication is that he didn't care enough to make it up himself or show it in the story, but he wouldn't go with it if he didn't think it could fit.
