I also think Yamato has the potential to be the greatest female straw hat member and not having the appeal of being the boring type as Nami and Robin but being crazy and having more fun activities as Luffy is.
Nami and Robin arent boring it’s just that standard comedy set ups need a straight man/woman to react to the situation at hand.

The polls are irrelevant. Jinbei was 110th in his first one and 35th in his second, he still joined. It’s not like Oda’s waiting to see how well Carrot and Yamato do and the favourite joins. Either he’s writing the story of these two joining the crews or he isn’t, a poll won’t change that

If that was what he was doing, it would be Law and Hancock as Strawhats anyway, as they’re far more popular and have been for a lot longer.

What the polls might do is determine how much screentime a character gets. He’ll look at Yamato’s placement and think “folk like what I’m doing here, I’ll keep this up.” Law’s huge role in the story is predominately down to how people adored him from his very first appearance.

What he’ll do with Carrot is a bit more uncertain because there’s such a discrepancy between how his primary market (Japan) and the rest of the world treat her. He might see this and think “maybe I should start giving her actual scenes”, he might continue doing exactly what he’s done throughout Wano with her- not a lot- because the Japanese don’t care all that much.

I suspect he’ll go for a slightly larger role, but nothing huge. Expand how much he shows her inevitable comeback against Perospero. Maybe tell the anime to dwell on the fight more than he did in the manga.
I think the poll won't affect his writing at all because
1. Too little time left to expand on someone he didn't plan to (also Gred said a couple of times that popularity doesn't affect Oda's writig. I think what happened with Law is Oda himself started to like the character a lot he gave him a whole two arcs rather than editors or simping readers forced him to tie Law to the main cast and to the main story. I don't see Oda doing something that big if his heart isn't there (I hope I'm making sense lol.))
2. Resent popularity poll is a hell hole with a lot of influence. Besides the OP promotion it was made for marketing purposes so they could know which kind of garbage merch will be selling better or what character they can start milking right away, not for Oda to make notes.

The strongest reason why Yamato will join the crew is simple:
  1. Ace wanted to take her out to sea; Ace died and couldn't come back to free her.
  2. Ace told Tama that he will defeat Kaido and create a country where she wouldn't have to go hungry; Ace died and couldn't fulfil his commitment.

Luffy is fulfilling Ace's commitment to Tama.
Luffy will fulfil Ace's commitment to Yamato.

Luffy has already begun working on Ace's promise to Yamato:
  • Yamato has been imprisoned for 20 years since she was 8 years old and had come to accept it as the way things were. She had even given up on escaping. Her friendship with Ace removed the shackles Kaido had placed on her heart. In that sense, Ace saved her.
  • Luffy removed the physical shackles Kaido placed on her body, and in that sense, Luffy too saved her.

Luffy will fulfil the last step that Ace could not do and take her to sea as well.

Therefore, Yamato is the next nakama.

You've got it the wrong way round.

1. Ace never made any kind of promise to take Yamao to sea. She offered to meet up one day when they were both out at sea and Ace said sure.

2. Ace promised to take Tama with him if she was a bewitching kunoichi when he returned.
