From @Rivaille's post about the new Ace novel:

Now we finally know the meaning of this line!

In Japanese, it's ambiguous how many duels there were, and Viz just decided to go with a singular duel, but the novel is stating that there were several headline-making duels that were so impressive, even the loser's reputation grew!

Yeah, they will, and tbf that's valid.
BUT this is the only info we've gotten about these duels since Ch 434, which came out in 2006. We Mihawk fans are long-suffering and people have been dissecting and arguing about the duels for so long! (Not to mention that scanlation that said they "shook the GL" or whatever, which is just totally made up and false.) It's really nice to get Mihawk tidbits now and then :)

Of course it's nice but the info we got thanks to @Rivaille was already more or less implied in manga.

Manga, VC and now Ace novel all are in sync with Mihawk portrayal of being top tier and above Shanks...

It's just people who don't like Mihawk are overlooking it or twisting the info to fuel their own wank or headcannon *cough* WSS title is Only about skill*cough*

I can't wait for the reveal of Shanks and Mihawk's first meeting and the start of their rivalry.

Imagine if Shanks met Mihawk in Loguetown and swore he'd become strong enough to succeed Roger's legacy, with Mihawk scoffing at his dream. Later, Shanks finds out that Mihawk has been crowned the WSS and he starts using Mihawk as a benchmark to measure his own skills, vowing to one day defeat Mihawk in a duel. Amused, Mihawk responds that he'll teach Shanks his place, no matter how many duels they have. Mihawk comes to see Shanks as a friend and enjoy their duels, with the loss of Shanks's arm being devastating to Mihawk since they could no longer be rivals.

Seeing as Shanks really has no PK ambition and tries to maintain the balance of power, his duels with Mihawk really must have been what propelled him to fame.
