Rewatched the episode. It was okay? Definitely felt like something that needed to be more ambitious, if only slightly so.
The opening gattling is long, but its really long in the manga as well, so thats not surprising. I think the issue is more how it was animated. It wasn't necessarily "terribly animated". There is an obvious level of competency to Luffy's attack. Its just that the animator who did that scene isn't really known for being stylistic. His a "quick" animator who has worked on the show for 20 years. The art was solid, but his animations aren't really snappy at all, which makes him a big step down from Katsumi Ishizuka's flourish in the previous episode.
The prevelance of CGI Kaido didn't help. I think that CGI Kaido would almost be tolerable if we didn't see its head, which is by far the most off putting part of him.
The pacing was just sort of "alright" past the initial flurry.
The art didn't melt I don't think. It looked mostly okay.
The second half was a bit stronger. I was happy with Zoro preparing to use the Tatsumaki even though I think his actual execution of the move was a bit lacking. I also really liked some of the worst generation dodging demolition gust.
Funnily enough, I think the non-action piece of the episode was probably the strongest directed. I personally liked the shamisen as ambient music and set an appropriately menacing tone for the scene.
The direction for the episode was fine enough. Storyboard wasn't the worst even if it borrowed a lot from the manga. It just felt like it really needed stronger visuals to elevate it. Out of the rooftop episodes, its definitely the weakest, with me putting it significantly below 1016, which I felt had generally really interesting direction to keep the action interesting.
Next episode, Sasaki vs Franky hype. Holy shit that actually looks really cool lol.
