There is no headcannon.... Rockstar popped in, and said "Boss he's attacking us. That means Kidd is the one doing the attacking.

Headcannon is you spinning it with "Well that could mean they attacked first, and they are surprised he is attacking back."

His grunts were scared of Mihawk of course they wouldn't attack. Plus Mihawk is WSS which everybody easily recalls as a Yonko level threat. This is like saying they would attack Whitebeard, Big Mom or Kaido if they come in.

Shanks himself was already touching his sword ready to attack Ace if he didn't started to talk about Luffy.

We don't know who attacked first.
