His backstory will probably involve him having sworn not to use his blade unless his life depends on it.

Aramaki didn't use his sword against Morley, but not did Aokiji use his brawling against Jozu. It's just Oda saving their tremendous skill outside the DF for worthy opponents.

Not every swordsman has to be honorable
Look at hachi and cabaji

If he is fully based on a swordsman ( like his movie inspiration )
Then I think we can see a drunken mode from him ( like kaido had )
But his cqc fighting style seems to be swordsmanship
