It's ironic that the Empire created many of the most badass and technologicaly advanced starfighters of the galaxy but kept using in priority and producing in masse the mediocre Tie Fighters while the far smaller Rebel Alliance used in priority much better fighters such as the X-Wing, Y-Wing, A-Wing or B-Wing.

One of the best examples was the Tie Avenger, a Tie starfighter that was created with the goal of having it becomes the new flagship of the Imperial Navy in terms of starfighters and to avenge the defeat of Yavin hence its name. That fighter was superior to any rebel ship with it having four laser canons, two missiles launchers, a speed and agility only matched by the A-Wing, a defector shield generator to boost its defense and a small tractor beam that allowed it to prevent enemy starfighters from escaping its laser canons at short distance and a hyperdrive that allowed it to travel in the hyperspace and so across the galaxy which the Tie Fighters and Bombers are devoid of.
But that very promising ship was killed in the egg by the Imperial Navy thinkers who were indoctrinated in the traditional Imperial doctrine of very fast and cheap fighters produced in-masse which helped again the rebels to keep their supremacy in terms of starfighters.
