This humbling was PART of the journey. A way to grow. The SAME is happening for Luffy now, but not simply in term of situation, in term of thematic TOO. Both Carrot and Luffy were humbled based on their cockyness, the fact that they didn't took the situation seriousely, over estimating themselves, laughed at the danger. Now the question is why did Oda never followed up on Carrot... ?
After all, we are talking about the ancient civilization, were IA and clones are lightyears ahead of Vegapunk.... Perhaps Joyboy was a little genius. Perhaps he left something more than the One Piece.. A training program with AI quirks? (that would be legit funny to get that storyline now)
Also, it often goes under the radar, but Usopp is the third natural conqueror of the strawhat crew (before even Sanji). It's just that what he wants to conquer is himself. His haki bloom in dressrosa was not coincidental. Usopp constantly tries to surpass himself. Within the lore of One Piece, this makes him a King
It's interesting because since P-TS Oda has been contantly placing one or more characters playing for this role in each arcs for humorous effect (Law/Fleet/Pekom/Pekom/Kid/Bonney/Loki)
It's the Rival/protagonist interaction. That you can easily find in shows like My hero, or Haikyu. Until the P.T-S, Luffy wasn't really "challenged" that way by other characters outside of the strawhats
This is interesting because this type of relationship has not always been a constant in One Piece. It's in fact something that gradually appeared in the New world (and slightly before with Impel Down)
