It's interesting because since P-TS Oda has been contantly placing one or more characters playing for this role in each arcs for humorous effect (Law/Fleet/Pekom/Pekom/Kid/Bonney/Loki)
It's the Rival/protagonist interaction. That you can easily find in shows like My hero, or Haikyu. Until the P.T-S, Luffy wasn't really "challenged" that way by other characters outside of the strawhats
This is interesting because this type of relationship has not always been a constant in One Piece. It's in fact something that gradually appeared in the New world (and slightly before with Impel Down)

I don't really think Luffy will get a "power up" as in a "new form". I rather think he will learn more about his devil fruit through the Heavens and the harley
I don't know if new readers get this but for me who's been living through dozens of high distress moments for Luffy.. there is always that stress feeling that linger long after the reading experience. I know that he will get up, but I can't shake the fear that somehow I could be wrong. Right now for ex, I'm watching Usopp telling Luffy to get up, but my mind keeps jumping on that stabbing. Will Sogeking come back?
