This is how i see it, after talking with @HA001 a while ago, he corrected my views
Basically, Ryou is not just Haki (since Wa No is full of swordsman) but it´s what we call level 2 barrier Haki already. And it is required to coat your swords as well since the Haki is flowing out of your limbs to the weapon of choice.
And level 3 is internal destruction CoA which Luffy jumped to.
Zoro has level 2 since he needed to learn it to coat his swords. And as far as i have understood, so do the scabbards.
Emission and Internal Destruction are one and the same - flow.
The application is a bit different, that's all.
Instead of blasting away it is focused on one spot.
Whether Zoro can do ID or not is pointless since such an application has no use among swordsmen.
Not if Black blades are made by continuously destroying the blade from within with Internal destruction.
You remember 937? Barrier and Black blades were parralled in the same chapter.
Now we know barrier can't create a black blade as Zoro uses it for some time it seems(and no black blade) but continue use of Internal Haki might do the trick for all we know.
For now the only thing we know for certain to make a black blade is long history of battles with the sword.

Could be but as you said, remains to be seen.
I think the long history of battles is not the key either because many swordsmen have such history.
The key is Armament Haki but what exactly is required to forge a Kokuto has yet to be revealed.

1) Oden who is a Wano native used hardening against the mountain God(Giant pig) and yet was still shocked by Roger's and Wb's using barriers on their weapons and seemed to be wondering how the fuck their blades were not touching.
2)When Oden returned to Wano,he taught the scabbards Ryuo(evidenced by Toki and kids being in the flashback) and that is what they used in their Tougen Totsuka against Kaido.
We know the scabbards were considered amongst the best samurai before Oden left Wano,do you think they didn't know about the ability Hyo describes (if barrier and ability to cut everything/ nothing are the same thing and needed Oden to come back and teach them) even though they all grew there? That seems fishy.
At this point Oda needs to explain things clearly because there are many contradictions to the Different versions of Ryuo.

-From Hyo's explanation, what I've personally gathered is Ryuo is what Wano calls Haki in general.
-The ability to become one with the sword and decide what to cut or not is regular invisible Coa for swordsmen/blade users(not very sure about this).
-Hyo goes further to demonstrate what Luffy wants to learn which is barrier that uses the concept of Haki flow to gather the excess Coa not used by the body to project it forward.
-Luffy surpasses Hyo's expectations and unlocks Penetration Ryuo which is far stronger version of the version of haki Luffy wanted to learn.
Now I may be wrong somewhere here and you guys' have a point so I'm waiting for clearer descriptions.
To me the Wb vs Roger clash proved Oden didn't know Barrier yet at that point as that clash is the best representation of what happens visually when two blades users apply barrier yet Oden was in total incomprehension.
Not necessarily the strongest but they were considered amongst the best Samurai Wano had to offer when marching towards the capital when Oden visited his father.
The scabbards being amongst the best Samurai in Wano at that point yet didn't know Barrier till Oden's return is contradictory to the ability to cut nothing and everything being a common thing every decent swordsman can do in Wano.
My take; Either the ability to cut everything and nothing at the same time is not barrier haki or Oda is very confusing in his way of describing/portraying its bladed users.
Lol like I said.
There is also the issue with barrier description:
-Coated with it,it allows the user to strengthen his attacks offensively and can also be used defensively as an invisible armor to protect from external attacks.
The second part of barrier description resembles ability to not cut everything, but the first part doesn't imply nor say barrier allows you to decide what to destroy what you want or not, just protects you defensively and increases your attacks regardless of what is infront of you.
If Zoro split open Kaido's tough dragon scale with his brute force and Hardening, make Kaido bleed like crazy. Isn't that mean Zoro is much more stronger in term of raw strength and Armament haki than Luffy?.
Luffy need to bypass Kaido with advance armament to hurt him, while Zoro only need Hardening/Ryuo.
