I think nobody would have though that roofpiece would have been just a way to nerf a bit Kaido to have Luffy beating him 1 on 1 later.
So it's pretty fair people started to think about Sanji vs King (although I've always said Sanji vs Queen because there were to many clear hints).
Anyway, Sanji vs King would have had sense too: similar look (with RS), clash of kicks back then, both aerial fighters with fire power.
So it's silly to slander people who believed in that possible match, 'cause they had reasons to do so at that time.

Luffy is the captain. He does anything for his friends. His friends also gather their backs.
Zoro is right arm. He will do anything for his captain. It's a monster. Communication with other members of the group is reduced to almost non-existent. After post time skip, his only relationship is almost sanji and luffy. He is always alone at Wano until Luffy arrives. Just show opponent and cut it.
Sanji is the left arm. He will do anything for his captain. He is the protector and watcher of the crew. His intelligence is the most advanced of the group in matters of war strategy . He has almost communication with every member of the group. Sanji is an emotional character. And it will never be a monster. Can we say powerless?

All three of them are different from each other in character and have complementary aspects for a ship as the 3 main forces.
The series could have continued without matching vergo with doflamingo or king.
The ODA must be showing something for Sanji's character wtih these matchups . Or you could say he hates Sanji and throws it away.
