im curious on everyone’s thoughts on messi wearing the gold and black robe, heard people say it ruined the moment, disrespectful, pushing boundaries etc and heard other people saying the opposite

I'm not familiar with Arab culture but i read online that it's a sign of royalty and warriors used to wear the robe once they win battles & that the royal family members of Qatar wear it.
So to me it seems like the King of Qatar presenting it and helping Messi put it on is a sign of respect.

Besides, Pele wore a Sombrero once he won the Mexico WC.

And atp, i don't really care about what he wore etc,. more than the fact that Messi finally won it. :myman:

The concept seems cool.

The crown prince giving him that to wear as if he's the emperor.

However, it looks bad on him.. like doesn't suit him at all :kobeha:

Which I think the main issue here afaik.

Some people everytime they see something about Qatari culture they'd immediately says it's Sportwashing bla bla , very whiny and Judgy imo

He barely did 20% of the team performance. Dude is getting overhyped. He was missing in the first half. Did not even get the penalties as well.

He played well with the goal and the final minutes of the extra time but that alone is not enough to say he dragged France lol. If Messi had played like that, he would be called washed lol.
Yeah that's what i'm saying.
He dragged the team back at the 80th minute and the team which looked like it was dead minutes before rallied around his penalty and his goal.
So in an essence, he did drag France back into the game and did it twice.

Mbappe needs to evolve more as a complete player. At this point, he is not at the level of current Messi let alone prime Messi
He isn't a similar profile to Messi.
I don't think he'll ever be able to do what Messi does/did week in and week out.
He's more of a goalscorer and resembles 2010-12 Cristiano or Thierry Henry to me.

But ofcourse, prime Messi is undeniably better.
At his age, Messi had 3 Balon D'Ors and 2/3 Champions Leagues if my memory serves me right.

The criticism is overblown imo it doesn't deserve that much drama the black robe from what i read is it's worn by the Qatari royal family
Will link tweet explaining this

yeah something like that i still had to look it up lol since im arab so my opinion don’t really matter but i think it was a nice gesture that the king gave the winner something that represents royalty and/or warriors

it’s stupid to say it was disrespectful im sure if the english king gave messi a crown or a piece of english royalty clothing no one would bat an eye

it actually works well with the picture it distinguishes him from the rest of the players as he should be and there is plenty of pictures with the team without it.

Yeah i dont really care about it and i don't think Messi cared about it either.
I was more pissed about Lautaro/Higuain 2.0 ruining the photo with fans which looked a lot like Maradona's photo after the '86 WC :kobeha:

well it’s not supposed to be wore only by itself :milaugh:

I disagree about the last part. If he was the one who won the penalty, then you'd have a point. But for the first penalty, he was not even instrumental in it. That is what really brought France back. The second goal was brilliant from him. After that he went silent again. The final penalty wasn't even something down to individual brilliance.

So basically the only thing he did for the first goal was scoring the penalty. That does not count as "dragging the team" in my view.

Imagine if Messi or Ronaldo played for 80 minutes without producing anything, only to score a penalty which they did not even create, would that be laudable?

dont know much of the arab tradition but it looks royal and the prince was wearing it too. it doesn't ruin the moment at all if anything it made Messi stand atop like a true emperor that he is. people really just love to hate on anything.

I don't see that as disrespectful.

Head of the State helped Leo wore that robe. Not just awarded him but actually helped him wore it.

I see this as sign of respect. The highest honour one can receive from any Head of the State.

Also, it give vibe of Royalty so I see that as fitting for someone like Messi who is at the Top now.

IDK why people making fuss over it but it doesn't really matter as I don't nitpick on such things. What matters to me is Argentina won.

And, if anyone is making fuss then I see them as being disrespectful because regardless of controversies regarding corruption and rights, Qatar had been wondering host.

I don't like L. Martinez. He missed so many chances in this WC.

It made Messi stand out even more
I got an awesome pic of it faded and all the gold stands out

Ya I liked this pic.

Vibes of the king getting crowned 🤩

The only people crying is Gary Shitiker and some other english folk. People shouldn't really give a shit about what they think.

Messi didn't seem to care, and then took it off after around 5 minutes.

I bet if shitiker would've shat himself again if Messi wore a rainbow gown though 🤔
