Character Discussion How would you react if Shanks was truly evil?

#21
It would make no sense for him to be evil after we saw his pathetic fleet. Who raise shanks flag so he’d protect them.
I will be really shocked. Everything points out to Shanks being a typical shonen good guy, a classic idol archetype
Not at all.....

Evil i agree with, its too farfetched, but saying he's a typical shonen good guy is silly when you frame some of the shit he does. We have little, if any, examples of Shonen good guys:

- Talking to a major enemy in isolation (hes hiding his presence)
- Setting the destiny the MC is on by giving him his devil fruit, setting a specific course of events and influencing him (in most good vs. evil stories, this is arguably the villain i.e. Vader, Voldemort, Aizen/Ywach, Madara due to Nine Tails, Griffith, etc)
- Making weird ass faces when he talks about Luffy or One Piece
- Is extremely brutal in nature when it comes to fighting his enemies
- Has been very open about going after one of Luffy's subordinates
- Probably the most enigmatic character in the series: we have zero idea what he wants.
- Finally, is just not close to being matched when it comes to his Haki portrayal onscreen. No current villain or protagonist has shown anything similar, and usually direct "good guys" are never this powerful outside of the MC.

So either Oda has drawn the most unorthodox "good" character in the history of storytelling, or there actually is something up with Shanks. Otherwise, Oda wouldnt do any of the above if he's just a normal good dude.

Did you read the chapter when he 0.5 shotted Kidd? Oda portrayed him as a saint who keeps fodders as his affiliates for their protection. Heck even Luffy isnt as charitable as Shanks, his grand fleet members are strong. Shanks is Oda's self inert, Oda aint gonna make him a Voldermort for example lmao, thanks for the laugh though.

Like ive said....he's not evil. He wants to protect the weak and achieve peace. The point being made is we dont know "exactly" what he intends to do with Luffy and the titular macguffin.

You need to understand the intent of my posts, i have never advocated for Shanks being evil. I absolutely do advocate for him being flawed and using Luffy for something that may not align with Luffy's own goals.

At worst I could see him be a Dumbledore like character.

Objectively a good person that in order to save the world(or whatever his actual agenda) he has to manipulate/use Luffy to an extent.

What flaws do Shanks have? Dont give me "he makes weird faces, he is hiding his presence, enigmatic, brutal" bs. Say something that makes sense.

Your "gary stu" argument does nothing to stave the point thats being made here either because the conversation has nothing to do with his good qualities.

If you want a flaw, ask yourself (be honest, dont just try and win an argument) why Oda would EVER draw this scene if not to make you question what the fuck Shanks is doing as a motive:

This scene has not been addressed, clarified or retconned. He still has left a very open indication make any of us ask "why" would Shanks openly talk to genocidal slave owners at the top of the world. But there you go, a "flaw", because not even "known good" character Rayleigh would have that kind of pull or do something like this. Not even Garp wants to be subservient to the WG. Even a villain like Akainu gets shat on by them.

Why else the fuck do you think 90% of WorstGen calls Shanks a snitch lmao. Its not just for the memes, theres an actual reason people say this.

Edit: comedic timing, literally read the comment above me lmao

Because he wants to talk about Blackbeard who Shanks sees as more dangerous than the Gorosei and WG. The same way he went to Moby Dick to warn Whitebeard. Is that all you have as Shanks' flaw? Just some speculations?

They are trolling lmao

You dont know this lmao. Thats precisely the point. And even if it is about Blackbeard, how is Blackbeard any worse than Celestial Dragons? They are, quite literally, destroying the world right now.

Actually try and understand why this just does not work to benefit Shanks's character as a "good" person.

The same way he went to Moby Dick to warn Whitebeard. Is that all you have as Shanks' flaw? Just some speculations?
Whitebeard is a fellow pirate who:
1. Is a known good character after the fact, which at the time, was more antagonistic than Shanks until Marineford where we learned about his love for family etc.
2. Not at all owning slaves or trying to destory the world

Not to mention, you KNEW about Shanks talking about Blackbeard the same chapter they met.

So ill ask you, why is Oda hiding Shanks mentioning Blackbeard when its "so" obvious? Again, it actually doesnt matter who the person is. Its the fact that he'a talking to them and they do not antagonize him.

They are trolling lmao
Thats BS. "Trolling" is just an advent for how people actually feel about a character, and its the same here.

Just looking at this scene in isolation ultimately suggests he is not "really" on Luffy's side:

Like theres pure antagonism drawn on his face lol, you dont draw characters lkke this unless you are trying to paint a picture about them, albeit loosely.

I dont even need to mention his Gorosei meeting or my PFP or how he absolutely brutalized Kid
Could be to stress how important and serious this topic is

Almost as much as who that addressed person is I'd like to know what he expects them to do.. Observe him? Capture him? Negotiate with him? Kill him?

Its like how Roger considered Xebec to be worse than Celestial Dragons
And yet, like the entirely of the God Valley flashback, you are missing context lol. We have no idea what he wanted, and no idea what was done there and what its fallout was.

So again, what is your point.

Thats not bs 😂 Come on
Yes it is? "Just kidding bro" is your excuse for people looking at Shanks meeting the Gorosei and not actually thinking he has something to do with them?
Lmao

Exactly and the point is....does it all matter? The fact that he's there supercedes any request he has for them. He's there non-violently as a pirate. It suggests some form of malicious intent because they are clear antagonists while Oda never actually specifies what Shanks is

Shanks is Mr worldwide.. He gets around and knows everyone doesn't matter if WG connected warlords like mihawk or old big names like whitebeard or Rayleigh lol

His crew is the only group to canonically remove appendages from another character lol (unless you count Akainu fisting people :chopoff:)
