I think it’s a fair comment to for folk to say ZKK is just a step too far for them and puts Zoro above Luffy- which just won’t happen.

We are talking about something that would be a massive, massive change in formula. It would be the biggest shock Oda would have written since Ace was killed. The two actually follow quite a similar pattern- the setup for Ace dying was all there, but because it‘s One Piece and no one dies, it still came as a huge shock. Especially since it came after Luffy had seemingly won and freed Ace.

That’s why the framing of it is so important, for it to happen, it must be shown that Luffy beating Kaido is still the bigger achievement, the main story.
I guess I don't Intuit this very well. I know I have a massive positive bias for Zoro, but I try to remain conscious of it.

I don't think I really understand the "Zoro cannot overshadow Luffy" arguments.
What exactly is Zoro not allowed to overshadow Luffy in?
  • Prominence in an arc
  • Infamy
  • Impact on the readers
  • Combat accomplishments

Leaving aside Romance Dawn, I think there are two arcs, that come to mind as counterexamples to the "Zoro cannot overshadow Luffy" argument.

So
Which events in the following arcs was the highlight?
Which character left the biggest impact on the reader?
  • Baratie:
    • Zoro's duel with Mihawk
    • Luffy's battle with Don Krieg
  • Thriller Bark
    • The Strawhats battle with Oars
    • Luffy's battle with Moriah
    • Zoro's battle with Ryuma
    • Zoro laying down his life for Luffy

In both cases, I think the highlight of the arc was the event involving Zoro, and Zoro left the largest impact.

In that sense I think Zoro has already overshadowed Luffy before.

Other than that, I don't agree that Zoro Killing Kaido can be analogous to Gin taking down Don Krieg or Tashigi landing the final blow on Monet. In both cases, there accomplishments was nothing noteworthy and an afterthought. There were no real reactions to what Gin/Tashigi did.

If Zoro cuts down Dragon Kaido in a Ryuma moment, it will be — at the very least — the highlight of its own chapter. It'll be an epic double page spread, and will garner at least as much of a reaction as Zoro defeating Pica did.

But I don't think it'll stop there.

Zoro would have replicated the legend of the "God of the Blade", and delivered the country from salvation in its darkest hour. The impact of and reactions of the Wano people would be profound.

Gyukimaru and Kawamatsu would reevaluate their initial assessment of Zoro.
Hiyori would be glad she chose to trust in him.

If Zoro replicates the most famous legend of the national hero of Wano and by doing so delivers it from its darkest hour, it must be one of the highlights of the arc.

The only scenario in which I see Zoro Killing Kaido being a "Tashigi takes down Monet" kind of moment is if it happens after Kaido has been completely defeated. But I don't think killing such a Kaido would be a Ryuma parallel at all.

The scenario I'm expecting is Luffy eventually triumphing over Kaido in a Hybrid (perhaps even Awakened) form and knocking him out. Kaido will eventually recover and transform into a Dragon. He may then try to destroy the Flower Capital with a massive Boro Breath. Zoro cuts the Boro Breath and beheads him with Hiryuu Kaen.

Regardless of how it shakes down, I expect Luffy alone (or Luffy + Zoro) to be credited with Kaido's defeat in the newspapers. I don't think Zoro will end up with a larger bounty or more infamy than Luffy. Law was given equal credit for Doflamingo's defeat despite not being as crucial as Luffy, so there is definitely authorial fiat involved in how the world reacts to events involving the protagonists.

The reaction of the wider One Piece world to Kaido's defeat needs not match the reaction of Wano's people.
