Rules Update -
Upon reflection regarding recent games here, I've decided to change how some rules work. I want to preface this by saying Mafia is an inherently intense game. People are going to get emotional, and in emotion, are going to say things they don't really mean. And as with any community, some people are going to dislike one another, for whatever reason. With that being said, there are two different tiers to this. Insults will happen, and it's simply not tenable to remove them from a game like this entirely. While everyone is still expected to adhere to the site rules, I don't want to foster a community that feels like they can't express themselves. I've always supported leniency for this, and that's still the case. There is, however, a difference between what I'm talking about, and personal vitriol that goes beyond the context of the games. As mentioned, some people will dislike one another. I have no intention of forcing you to be friends - that's not possible. But there is no place for these spats *within* games. From hereon forth, anyone who makes referencing to ongoing/personal issues with another user that has no bearing on the game itself will be force replaced, and failing that, modkilled.
I've wanted to leave these decisions to hosts, because of the affect it can have on a game, but it's beyond clear to me that hosts will not take action that's needed for fear of affecting their game. And I completely get it - no host wants to modkill a player. This sort of responsibility worked "back in the day", perhaps because hosts were more willing to compromise their games, but it's not working now. Hosts will still have the say in whether arguments reach a certain level it shouldn't, provided that the arguments are still related back to the game, but once it reaches a level where it no longer is within the bounds of the game, that's where that responsibility will end.
I encourage users to use the "report" function for comments that they feel crosses this line. How this will work is once I see a report (or the comment itself, if I happen to be reading the thread), I'll review it to see if it crosses this line. If I feel it does, that user will be threadbanned. I'll then inform the hosts of this. The hosts will then need to either modkill the slot, or look for a replacement. Note that this notification is not an invitation for the hosts to appeal on the player's behalf. While this replacement search is ongoing, the player threadbanned is invited to start a PM with the hosts, myself, and the user's this comment was directed towards. While the player can defend themselves here, the main expectation is this is to allow the player who crossed the line to offer an apology to those concerned. Should that apology be accepted, they may be allowed back in the game. I would like to reiterate - please do not assume that I will see posts that you feel go beyond in-game frustration. If you feel something is objectionable enough,
use the report button.
I do not expect this will solve the whole issue. But I do hope that this will begin to deter behaviour that is reaching the point of being irreconcilable. I believe that, for the most part, everyone in this community is a good person. Flawed, as we all are, but good. The people I do not think this of, are not welcome to play here any longer. As a collective, we *need* to do better. Nobody wants a community that is hostile towards one another, and I frankly see no good reason for it. Most of us barely know each other outside of these games, there's no reason to develop grudges or hatred between one another over something like this. This will probably not be the only thing I need to change on this, but for now I think it's the first step into what I hope is a better environment. I should also stress that hosts still have the freedom, to remove players that are causing issues even if it doesn't quite cross this line - this is purely taking the responsibility away from hosts once conduct reaches a certain threshold that I think is most damaging to community harmony.
