Mihawk dying is like Luffy not becoming Pirate King or Usopp not becoming a brave warrior.
Mihawk is going to survive and will continue to survive until his eventual encounter with Zoro. And even then he will probably still be alive after their clash.
Okay so if Mihawk isn’t the strongest then beating him doesn’t make you the strongest. The Gorosei wouldn’t become the strongest swordsman since Mihawk wasn’t
and if the Gorosei was the strongest all along then why was Mihawk called the strongest?
its very possible to me that shiryu kills mihawk by stabbing him in the back while invisible. theres a reason "a scar on the back is a swordsmans shame" got brought up and i think its because someone major is getting a fatal backstab from shiryu
Yonko fans want mihawk dead so bad because his very existence contradicts them being the top in the verse. No shiryu will not kill mihawk if anything shiryu has a higher chance of killing shanks. His captain has beef with him and they’re both swordsman, far more plausible.
Oda would hardly somewhat waste two decades+ of portrayal to have Mihawk defeated by someone or something not called Zoro, just to come up with a twist.

Maybe Oda wants to follow a classic of making the possible final confrontations of the straw hats very strong and that is why he would make the crew of the cowardly fatbeard very strong and that would be the reason that Shiryu kills Milaugh, who knows
Mihawk won’t ever fight Zoro in a serious 1 v 1 in One Piece. As you said: Their relationship is too friendly and Mihawk has no intention on attacking the SH. Neither have the SH a reason to fight Mihawk. So why should the go all out and risk their life? Makes no sense.
Scenarios I see:
1. Mihawk gets defeated. Zoro defeats the person that defeated Mihawk.
2. Mihawk and Zoro Are allies and a gigantic attack like (headcanon) letting the moon fall on to earth can’t be stopped by Mihawk. Zoro steps in a gets the job done: simply said - Zoro handles a situation Mihawk couldn’t handle
3. Some brainwashed/ DNA clone of Mihawk serves under WG and in Final war is fighting with Zoro
4. Mihawk refuses a fight with Zoro at the end of story telling him: I’m no match for you anymore.
