He even gave Lucci and Zoro multiple fights/clashes on Egghead only because he knows that they are beloved characters for the battle lovers.
He knows that Lucci as character did well to the fans back then, he knows that Zoro has alot of fans. He even gave Zoro a Nusjuro clash, even if it was stalled out. Yes he trolls, but he loves his readers alot and still respects them. He is just playful.
So imho Egghead was a full on fanservice arc imho, and people still say he doesn't care about his readers is complete asspull.
People that think like that should simply stop thinking, or they should fix their irl situation and personal problems before they get back to reading One Piece and vent their irl frustrations on the writer and other fans.

Yea an offpanel stallfest with 2 panels of meaningless clashes every 5 chapters sure fed the battle lovers 
Oda could also have done nothing, that's the point of fanservice.

I'd say that Water Seven was better than Enies Lobby in terms of writing, but yeah this saga was the peak of One Piece in terms of story.
Now One Piece has declined storywise, especially with WCI/Wano, Egghead wasn't as bad but its flaws and ending indicate that the problems remain largely the same, and we may have yet to reach the bottom.
