Break Week Oda probably got bullied into making Sanji a fighter post timeskip

#82
Punk Hazard: Sanji gets his leg broken, hurts his leg on that steel wall Franky had to laser down

Dressrosa: Doflamingo wipes the floor with him

WCI: loses to judge and Luffy has two fights

Outpour of criticism from his fans

Wano: fights Page One, X-Drake, Queen

Basically it seemed that just like he was doing with all the straw hats, Oda wanted Sanji to stick to his role more than he wanted him to be a fighter, but due to the general dislike by Sanji's huge fan base, he had to scrap the direction he was taking with his character and focus more on his fights than his cooking
Don’t forget that Daifuku made him his own personal f*cktoy in WCI

Or, Oda used Sanji to hype up other characters because as long as Sanji succeeds in protecting other peoples lives he still accomplishes his goal?

Punk Hazard - Saves Tashigi and the G5 marines and carries them to safety after the fight
Dressrosa - Succeeds in saving Brook Nami Chopper and Momo from Doffy then again against Big Moms flagship.
WCI -Wipes the floor with Yonji for insulting those important to him. Forces Judge (a yonkou commander level fighter) to cheat in a one on one duel, and breaks through the exoskeleton of Niji with a single kick, then kicks oven so fast he saves Chiffon and carries her away without anyone noticing his presence.
Wano - Fights Page One, a Tobi Roppo, until everyone is safe then stops because he didn’t wanna cause unnecessary damage to the capital and the plan. Fights Drake, another Tobi Roppo, low diffs him in the anime and even in the manga was able to win or escape unscathed, then defeats a 1.3 billion berry commander in Queen.

But no Oda doesn’t plan on him being a fighter.
Character literally gets introduced as both a fighter AND as cook in a restaurant owned by a former pirate.

Galaxy-brain mouth breathers:
"SaNji Is jUsT A cOOk. nOt a FigHTeR".

:kuzanshut:
a cook and still considered as Third strongest Strawhats and also Wings of The Pirate King and also he is a Military Advisor.

Makes my work even easier.

As expected of my commanders.

If anything, Oda intended to give him newkama power ups but wasn't allowed to by his boss because of the potential negative reaction by transphobes among the fandom and people who don't even like One Piece despite reading it; so he had to rewrite his plot into the Vinsmokes and genetics, which fit him nothing.

But this thread? Absurd. Sanji has always been a fighter apart from a cook and the crew's third strongest. It was natural for him to do what he always did as soon as we had a serious fighting arc. Queen is just Kuroobi, Mr. 2 or Jabra over again. If he could already be such a fighting monster while achieving top class cooking, why would Oda change the dynamics? He already was great at his role.

To explain this once and for all...

Sanji's case is called the "Worf effect". It's a trope used in Shonen or other genres to hype up the (primarily) villains. You use a strong fighter who usually belongs to the main cast and let the villains utterly crush them to hype up the villains' strength. Example: Vegeta in DBZ, Renji in Bleach at times.

Now why is Sanji the victim for this? Simple, because Oda can't use Luffy or Zoro for this and Sanji's the next best thing. Luffy's and Zoro's goals revolve around getting stronger, Sanji's doesn't. So he can use him for this without destroying Sanji's end goal.

What does that mean for the question? Sanji was always a fighter, but doesn't have to be the strongest, so is Oda's worf effect victim. It's that simple. So Sanji's always been strong and a fighter and was just reduced to a hype tool for most of the NW plot.

He actually can’t use Zoro ever since East Blue. He’s used Luffy dozens of times and prior to Baratie used Zoro every arc to hype up villains.

He can’t use Zoro because Zoro vowed to never lose again and if he fails to uphold that promise and his character takes a major hit.

However with Luffy and Sanji Oda can caveat the fight.

Luffy - As long as luffy gets up and wins the next time he’s fine because “Rubber always bounces back”

Sanji - As long as the people he’s protecting dont get hurt any further he’s fine because that’s just in his character.

This, too.

I think Sanji looked well with his power ups. The Exoskeleton thing is not necessarily forced considering he is supposedly genetically modified from what it seems. On the other hand I hate when power ups are not justified and we witnessed several of those situations. :josad:

For Zoro I think it's less about the promise and more about his character in general, because I feel like he's technically "lost" and been used as a hype tool even after the Mihawk incident:

Enel, Lucci, even Kaido

These weren’t really losses just failures.

It wasn’t a formal one v one. And yes Zoro failed to win; however I wouldn’t say he lost either. It’s not like when Zoro fought Buggy. Or when Zoro fought Mihawk. Both times Zoro lost one on one with no interference.

Kizaru just shot him when he was already exhausted.
Enel just cleaned house against everyone

Kuma is maybe the closest but Kuma wasn’t fighting to win but just testing the resolve of the straw hats
