It looks way more scenic ofc but I wonder if Oda exaggerated Luffy's strenght despite the bloodlust
Luffy is plenty capable of knocking around a drunk as hell emperor.

Anyway, for the final clash, I actually really liked the anime actually bothered to do something interesting while adapting it as opposed to just copying Kaido's pose in the manga(which would have been dreadful). The anime version did a nice job of subverting how Luffy typically beats his worst opponents by overpowering their most powerful attack with his own finisher. Think back to fights like Luffy vs Crocodile, Luffy vs Doffy, hell, even fights like Luffy vs Arlong and Hody ended in similar fashions, with Luffy's finishing overpowering his enemies. This episode framed Luffy doing that to Kaido, with them both using their finishing moves making an intense face and screaming their asses off, but in a nice little twist, had Luffy be the one who was completely overpowered.

I felt that's a bit more interesting a way to adapt the manga, as opposed to Oda's straight anti-climax(which was kind of undercut by how awful Kaido looked while doing the finisher).

Absolutely fucking awful. This is what happens when you attempt to stretch like 7 pages into a 20 minute episode.

I knew the anime had pacing issues so I stopped watching it back in Dressrosa, but I figured lemme check it out since this scene is so epic there's no way you could fuck it up. But Toei never fail to go above and beyond.

Even beyond the excruciatingly slow pacing, the design choices are baffling. Wtf was that shitty red aura around Luffy? When did Luffy learn Skywalk? Between shit like that and every sentence, action or minute detail taking a solid minute of freeze frames, gasps and PowerPoint animations, honestly it'd be harder to do worse.

If I was Oda I would get out of any contract he has with the studio until they do better because this is making his work look like garbage.

I thought this was better than 870, the Luffy vs Snakeman episode, personally.

So yeah, easily one of the strongest episodes, at least animation wise, in the entire franchise. Its nice knowing that 3 of One Piece most well animated episodes just dropped all in the same year.

I’m one of the anime’s biggest critics but I thought they did a decent job. I don’t think Kaidou’s Zoan form is as strong as the anime made it out to be & a few of the moves Luffy used against Kaidou like the culverin doesn’t make sense if you think about said move’s application as already pointed out on here. However, the point the anime tried to get across & prolly why they included the culverin was that Luffy threw everything he had at Kaidou but it was ineffective and then he got put down in one attack for his troubles. The execution isn’t the same as the manga but the idea is the same I think.

Pluses for me this episode were:
- Kaidou summoning lightning from the skies to clad his body with it for the attack.
- The way Kaidou ate boundman attacks with no guard was boss (again the execution wasn’t the same as the anime but it was the same idea).

Negatives
- Toei really has to stop with that aura shit not just coz it’s retarded in OP but it also had a negative effect of dwarfing the uniqueness of Kaidou’s club this episode. I’m sure the anime-only’s didn’t really think much of Kaidou’s club after the episode.

- The final clash between Kaidou & Luffy shouldn’t have been there as it took away a bit from Kaidou’s attack. In the manga when I saw the panel of Kaidou one-shotting Luffy, it took my breath away and felt like absolute domination on Kaidou’s part. However, the anime didn’t give off the same impression. All I took away from that scene was that Kaidou is stronger. The impact of the attack also didn’t feel as devastating as the manga.
- Pacing. Kaidou’s comment to Luffy about what King he said he’d be was out of place. The anime should have put in the scene of Luffy’s comment to Kaidou in the preview to the episode at least or made Kaidou remember it when he attacked Luffy.

They even made Luffy use a King Kong Gun.

:seriously:

This anime is a hopeless case.
I'm so tired of Toei nerfing KKG. Obviously 1 KKG is not enough for Kaido but it didn't even move him off his feet. First in Dressrosa with the "clash", now here they're making it as weak/weaker than a basic Kong Gun.

This move is Luffy's secret up his sleeve as we saw with Hyogoro. Don't you think Oda could have used it against Big Mom or Kaido? He's clearly saving it up.

How did they nerve King Kong Gun? Like yes, there was a struggle in Dressrosa, but that was more bad in the anime because it was poorly paced, and half of it was poorly animated. I don’t see how it was weaker considering it still did the same things as in the manga. It still made the same massive ass crater, and still beat Doffy in one hit.

How did they make it weaker than a Kong Gun this episode? They literally treated it exactly as you described it, as Luffy’s final ultimate attack on Kaido. It was literally confirmed as being not going to be enough for Kaido. I don’t see a problem with the anime showing that.

I don’t see any problem with the anime adding it, and I don’t think anyone has really articulated why it’s a problem.
