Speculations Pound is still dead

#21

So in this chapter, it appears as if Pound might actually be alive and that he some how escaped WCI. This just doesn't sit well with me for several reasons.

Pound had a really good death. It was one of the highlights of WCI. Making pound alive would ruin what he did in WCI. While Oda did revive Pell, I don't think most of the fans liked that. I think Oda learned from his mistakes as he's killed many characters post-skip, whereas literally only Ace and Whitebeard died pre-skip.

Furthermore, it just seems implausible for Pound to be alive. Oven had a clean shot at his head. Oven was also on Cacao island for several hours, meaning that even if Pound survived the initial blow, Oven had ample time to kill him. Cacao island was literally surrounded by beast pirates and ultimately, big mom herself even came to the island. How did Pound escape all of that?

I feel like making Pound alive would ruin a genuinely good moment in WCI as well as needing a large amount of plot armor to be believable. What I think is more likely is this.

After pound died, Oven put his body on a ship and cast him off to sea. Cacao island is made of chocolate after all, and what's the point of creating islands made of food if you bury corpses inside of them. Pound's corpse just happened to find its way to dressrosa where it will then by taken by the tontattas. The tontattas being good hearted people, will naturally want to hold a funeral if they find a dead corpse.

Capone, Chiffon, Lola, and Pez will attend the funeral for whatever reason. None of them will find out the true identity of Pound, however Pound will ultimately get a happy ending as he will be laid to rest with his daughters and grandson by his side.

I think this would be so much better and would carry so much more emotional weight than if they just retconned Pound's death
I liked him to be dead

but ...

at this point it's more than enough clear he should be alive

... let's pray Pedro be dead at least

BUUUUT he's alive LOL

Actually, him being alive is NOT what saddens me!

It's the fact that "We are STILL in Capone Gang cover story" that makes me more sad!

That means.... Tontatta found Pound... they will treat him... take him to Dressrosa..... and then... Oda will make Pound meet both of his daughters Lola and Chiffon

And basically... for Oda to do that... he will MOST LIKELY spend 10 more chapters on this idiotic cover story which will NEVER END

Pound being alive is just another one of those whims of Oda not letting anyone die

What really pains me is that WE HAVE TO SPEND MORE TIME on this shitty boring cover story!

It's a mix of both bad writing and poor reading comprehension. I'd say anyone who actually thought Pound was dead is just as much as fault as a reader as Oda is a writer for doing another fakeout.

And tbh, even saying it's a fakeout isn't really right. Oda at no point had anyone say that Pound was dead. He never showed a body. He just showed Oven's attack about to land on him. Why were people expecting that to be a fatal attack when throughout OP we've seen people getting slashed and surviving?
Sorry Garp, but you can't put it on the reader this time. Many just thought we're finally over this and Oda doesn't resort to bullshit writing in cases like that.

1) Pound is complete fodder.
2) Oven is a really strong dude.
3) Oven totally intended to kill him.
4) Oven swung a freakin flaming sword - with full force as we saw in the panel - right at Pound's neck. The latter didn't even try to defend himself.
5) Oda used an entire chapter on showing us Pound's last words and emotional farewell speech.
6) Little Pez started crying his eyes out at the exact moment the "slash" katana is shown. This is totally a sign to the reader that Pound is dead now.
7) Oven, who is a veteran and should know how to finish such an easy job, was shown calm and relaxed in the very next chapter. Zero reasons to suspect that anything went wrong with the execution.

That was a massive fake out for absolutely no reason at all.

And here is why ladies and gentlemen! The Will of P. will live on strong
1- Pell
2- Pound

Next in line is my boy PEEDROOOO

MARK MY WORDS LOL

Also, yeah... anyone saying Pound is dead... they are in denial actually... this cover story ends the discussion...

It would be glorious if they approach the boat and they find Pound but he actually is dead, that would be a huge middle finger.. to what Oda has done until now so nope. We will get Pound alive and well plus future covers with him and his daugthers and grandson. This is 110% sure.

Also at this point it is safe to assume that every character that is not shown die/dead has good chances to be actually alive.

Make no mistake, I fully expect characters like Yasu or Pedro to come back alive in the future.
When this happens, I will fully drop OP though.

Never thought I would say that, but recently read all of Berserk and HxH and that devalued OP a lot for me. That's why I've been really inactive the last months (escept for today and yesterday).

We have to spend 10 extra chapters on this boring cover story

I can put it on the reader, because the series is twenty years old and we all know how Oda does things. Pell also had the grand farewell where he talked about how he had been so incredibly proud of serving the Nefertiti's, we had the symbolism of the crumbling falcon statue... and then he survived. He had even less reason than Pound to survive given his role in the story is pretty much complete. At least with Pound we knew he'd yet to meet Lola, and his family didn't actually know who he was. Of course Oda's going to bring them all together.

Then we had the arc long build up for the genocidal Buster Call that didn't kill a single person who invaded EL.

Then Caeser's grand weapon of death that didn't actually kill anyone, and last we saw Brownbeard he was planning on saving everyone that had been hit by it. And then another gas weapon that was too slow acting to actually kill any Minks.

It's probably one of the worst things Oda does as a writer, but give me a break, if you fell for it again it's on you. Oda, decapitate a defenceless grandfather as a reward for him saving the day? No chance.

Then we just have a different stance on the whole topic.

In my eyes the reader just accepting that Oda continues his insanely dumb cop-outs, when it comes to those "death situations", would be outright stupid and lazy.

Fans can reasonably hope for an author to grow up and correct past mistakes, too.

"If you fell for it again it's on you."

I actually didn't, which makes it even worse. Back on OJ I stated that both Pedro and Pound will be alive and that I will absolutely hate it, when it's revealed.

Lol, Pedro is a SURE COMEBACK for me, Yasui not so much.. but who knows.. I wouldn't exclude it LOL... But Pedro? I'm telling you all, just you wait and see for yourselves!
And my reasoning for that are very simple honestly:

1- WCI arc, it had a full moon (where Carrot used her solung)... Same for Pekoms who is LESS IMPORTANT as character than Pedro.... he went Solung.... And we know for a fact that Pedro can control his solung form... because he TRAINED Carrot for it.... If Oda wanted Pedro dead...he would have revealed ALL OF PEDRO'S cards and arsenal before killing him..... meaning he would have gone Solung BEFORE dying to basically see EVERYTHING about him... hiding Pedro's solung form means Oda is DELAYING its appearance... otherwise it doesn't make sense... the SHs were in real pinch in that arc that Oda is giving all kinds of plotholes to make the SH escape... why wouldn't he make Pedro reveal a powerful form to help them BEFORE sacrifcing himself in a different event...

2- His connection to Bepo by having Zepo as partner NEVER BEEN BROUGHT UP... but Oda will have to make Pedro and Bepo have their moment about reminiscing Zepo

3- Sanji's words at the very end of the arc, where it feels like Sanji understood Pedro the most despite his sacrifice... Pedro sure is happy to sacrifice himself to let SH run... but Sanji hinted that "this was NOT your place of death" despite Pedro's own conviction of going to that island not intending to die... Reason is... Pedro's dream is explained to us as him wanting to be the bridge or the linchpin of the new dawn (which is by making the SH the bringer of the new dawn... escape from there)

HOWEVER, this is NOT HIS ORIGINAL DREAM... Pedro wanted to be PART OF that new dawn, which was hinted by those points:
- Him asking Roger to take him because he felt that he can accomplish it with Roger
- Him taking out his own eyes... trying to survive by any cost... to witness the new dawn

4- Lastly, and the BIGGEST CLUE for any One Piece character not dying yet... is we NEVER SAW THEIR BODIES... people should know better with this reason basically

that's on top of many CLUES AND HINTS that he's joining the SHs from "Foxy arc" where Luffy drew Pedro's crescent moon ear.... or the similarities/contrast Pedro shares with other crewmembers:
1- With Jinbe who is ex-captain of Sun Pirates/ while Pedro is ex-captain of "nox pirates" (Nox = night)

2- With Brook, who BOTH LOST 50 years of their life! Brook spent it ALONE.. Isolated... Pedro were stolen from him by BM

3- His style which matches Sanji...

Lastly, his position as a Lookout... which he did during their travels into WCI... also Jaguar is known for the "NIGHT VISION" ability

and lastly, the cover page which showed ALL PRESENT and FUTURE SHs as cats: it's our job to analyze which one is who!

There are some obvious ones like:
5 Chopper
1 Nami
2 Zoro
10 Jinbe

etc..

Number 11 is PEDRO FOR SURE... that is EXACTLY how Pedro's tail look like... just look it up

He's a future SH... and he RESONATED with Luffy 100 times more than Carrot... if he makes a comeback which he WILL... and Luffy sees him again... pretty sure Luffy will ask him to join him...

He's alive and starving. Chiffon will bake a cake for him.
Is it ok that he's alive? Yes because he's a bottom background character, him being alive doesn't change anything in the story. It's not like if it was ace showing up at a straw hats party and acting like nothing happened.

The fact is that One piece's audiance target is young teens and that was true 15 years ago as it is now. Oda knows this trick works, he did it plenty in the past and it always payed off, imo the only red line he has not to cross is to not do this with important characters. Young teens most likely don't care or even like to be sad but then rehave these characters alive while old timers even if a bit pissed, and just some of them, will actually never leave the manga because of nostalgia.

I can accept this fake tension about secondary characters because I pretty much don't care about them and imo this stays true for a lot of readers but when he did the chapter 900 fake ship destruction that was irritating because he joked with the main cast and not with some secondary character we will never have in the story again for real.

I think if he did Pound's "death" like Pekom's demise....then everything would be alright. But the fact that we wasted an entire chapter on it....thats when I cant forgive.
