Even if Zoro unlocks it against Smile fodders, it could be a very emotional scene. Picture this : as he’s butchering his opponents, there are more and more Smile fodders showing up and while he’s dealing with them, something terrible happens in the fight against Kaido. Some of the Red Scabbards die, Luffy gets his ass kicked real bad and Zoro can sense what’s happening with his CoO. He desperately wants to go help Luffy and the Red Scabbards but the Smile Fodders hold him back : that’s when he gets angry and releases a burst of CoC that knocks down the Smile fodders.

Well of course, the effect of CoC will be on fodders. It's not like anybody of substance is affected by CoC anyway.

I've been a main advocate for Zoro vs King pretty much since King was revealed

However with each coming chapter, it seems like Zoro fighting Kaido holds more weight so I definitely would like to see him in the Kaido fight

But as @Seth Rollins said, both would be perfect
