Throughout One Piece, the emphasis has always been to defeat the antagonists. I can't remember a time that Oda used the term kill in any arc in such an explicit way. In 1033 Zoro is told that swords are for killing. Now that Zoro understands how to work with his swords and has advCoC we will see where Oda wants to go from there.

After Luffy defeated Kaido, Zoro killing Kaido as leftover would just damage Zoro's character period.
Luffy winning Kaido as 1v1 is as clear as theme goes since this whole arc is for Luffy to become Yonko and his crew to become a Yonko's crew.
