Character Discussion Thoughts on Kaido when he made his debut and Thoughts on him now

He’s far less viscous and ruthless than I expected. He’s actually pretty agreeable at times, specifically when he wants to celebrate with his crew. However, in some areas, he’s a lot darker, particularly in how he treats his child, and a bit tragic due to the impression he failed to achieve what he set out to do based on the King flashback. But then he’s also more quirky, as well by incorporating his drinking habits into everything he does.

Oda has been trying everything and the kitchen sink with Kaido. It’s made it hard to get a read on his character.

He's definitely a lot more interesting now but I do feel Oda is flip flopping a lot with him and his rapid drunken mood swings don't help ironically. I also still long to see the Kaido who slaughtered Moria's crew, how and why that happened and what made him become so bitter, so cynical and lacking trust in others, like Crocodile is and such.

The glimpse of younger Kaido when he met King was great and I love how friendly and caring Big Mom was to him when they met too but I find his character so confusing now and maybe contradictory. I kinda understand him, his viewpoints and such, I'd really like to see more of his relationship with Yamato and her mother especially, who she is and what happened to her (most likely dead and even murdered or by accident since its Oda).

He's a great fighter but I really don't like him having FS so randomly, although seeing him cycle through different fighting styles based on his rapidly changing moods was interesting and unexpected.

He's still a very entertaining, intriguing, iconic villain that I really want to learn so much more about. I wish Oda would stop holding off on his backstory already.

He's a conservative Oni who's Influenced by Xebec and possibly others.

Anyone who lives in multicultural countries knows how people can have contradictory beliefs due to being influenced by several Cultures.

Kaido having a Mixed Child but forbidding said Half Human child from being friends with Humans is actually accurate to how a lot of somewhat Racist people who had Mixed Kids irl act for example

Fantastic analysis. The impressionable Kaido is inspired by Xebec, Shanks style, and change the world like his late captain did. Due to potential prejudice against him, Linlin, the globalist and libertarian, takes a natural shine to the oni boy, but his more conservative values clashes with her's in the end. He fails at some point in becoming the man he'd hope to be at the start of his pirate career, and losing some of his innocence along the way. He now lives vicariously through his child, like a lot of parents try to, by molding them into his image.

Why Conservative?
He wears Traditional Oni outfits, makes his Crew to wear Fake Oni Horns, forced his Daughter to adhere to Oni Traditional values , even told her that an Oni should rule Humans by Force and made a racist comment about Humans being stubborn and refuse to give up hope which is actually a common thing many expansionist cultures irl said about Cultures that resisted them.

Kaido's values are a mix of Oni Culture, Xebec lite leadership and his desire to become Joyboy.

This is probably why they never had a kid even if Big Mom wanted an Oni in Tottoland, Big Mom's idea of Racial tolerance seems to include everyone giving up their culture to a certain degree and adopting Big Mom's "Ideal" Culture

Kaido and Arlong have a lot in common now that I think about it. Arlong had a resentful admiration of Human Culture to the point that his Park was modeled after Saobody. Kaido is influenced by Human culture and his role Model is a human and his Daughter is Half Human, but he seems to have conflicted feelings about it to the point of doubling down on Oni superiority.

Despite his constant claims over Fishman superiority, Arlong suffered from an inferiority complex of being a fishman, imo. To the point he needed to head to the weakest sea to seek validation.

Maybe Oden started to help change Kaido's mind on humanity, but due to how his battle with Oden concluded, he's torn between his sense of pride as an Oni and the respect he had gained for this samurai he dishonored.
