Questions & Mysteries What did Luffy and Roger say?

#24
Like Nataljia said, it´s gonna be something silly that, if you think harder about it, might have deeper implications, even if the ones saying it did not mean it like that.

Can´t think of what it is though.
Or maybe something that is so hard to achieve that they instead laugh at it.

In this chapter flashback Ace tell Yamato that he n Sabo truly believes Luffy's capable of achieving this and that they won't forgive anyone who dare laugh at it.
That implies it's hard/almost impossible to achieve. Like people laugh at off the idea of Sanji finding All Blue.

Roger didnt make it up, the world called him that

The name does not
Name did exist.

There are certain families of D's who has knowledge of what D means.

World Government knows what one piece is.

Roger went for execution - to start Golden age of pirates and made One piece public.

Luffy comes along and says the exact same things.....

I want to be one piece is silly.. because to world it's just a treasure.

But it's a dream for pirates because you to get one piece you have to become PK.

I think it's something like "I want to be the one who sets the whole world free"
Precisely what I was thinking, I really don’t know what else this common refrain could be...it wouldn’t make sense to hold back a declaration about becoming King of the Pirates since we’ve already heard it so much, and I’m not sure what else could be so poignant or emotionally impactful that everyone who hears it think it’s alternately laughable (for being such a lofty, unreachable goal) or inspiring (as it shows Roger and Luffy’s true, compassionate nature). Was kinda hoping we’d hear it at the end of chapter 1000 instead of the usual shit, but it’s been teased so much this arc, we’ll find out soon enough.

See Rayleigh talking about it, the world started to call him that after reaching Raftel, its not something he intended
You know why Shanks got his eye on Luffy?
Because the little kid said the same thing as his captain did - I will be the king of the pirates.
Looks pretty obvious to me but if it turns out incorrect, oh well...

Have you even read the flashback

Both the name One Piece and the title King of Pirates is something the world started to call him.
Even if we assume the WG called the treasure that from the start, which we have no indication of, Roger did not know about it.
Entire flashback they called it "the treasure".

It’s not being the pirate king.

First of all, as has been said above, Roger couldn’t have said that. The title didn’t exist, it was something that people started calling him after going to Laugh Tale

Secondly, there’s no point Oda hiding the two of them saying that. We’ve seen Luffy say he wants to be the Pirate King over and over again. Why hide something that Luffy has been saying since chapter 1?

Thirdly, it’s not something unique to Luffy. Near enough every pirate captain wants to be the PK. Don Krieg wants to be the PK. What Luffy said is meant to be unique to both him and Roger, something only the two of them want to do. Shanks wouldn’t care about Luffy saying he wants to be the PK, cause he could find plenty of people saying the same thing in the world.

Maybe I missed something, but why shouldn't it be 'I'll become the King of the Pirates'?

I thought that the final statement of Luffy in this chapter was exactly this declaration, it was repeated a lot of times with Kaido and Big Mom challenging him to say that in front of their faces and the Ace-Yamato flashback you mentioned
It cant PK because that wasn't Roger's goal riger just like the sound of it it wasn't something he was striving for

See, let me tell you something.

It's sound silly but impactful.
It's a dream
And, it's very important from story point of view because oda omitted that out

There are only three notions which actually fits the criteria.

1)Luffy unknowingly said the full form of "D"

But it's far fetched and leaves lot of room for interpretation as of now.

2)Luffy says something's on the lines of "I want to be free man" - silly for a child to say and impactful.

But no reason for oda to omit this out.

3)this leaves us with one piece. Now, we can safely assume one piece is not some treasure world government is trying to hide.

One piece could also have a different name all together - a more familiar term

Now, yes World called it one piece and I missed this part but world government still knew about one piece or whatever this is even before roger became PK.

And, why exactly the world named it "one piece"? Who came up with this idea?

Oda can literally twist the narrative to his liking

It will be king of the world.
There is no reason for oda to omit this one out like he did

'I'll become the King of the Pirates'?
Roger did not come up with "king of the pirates"
[automerge]1609086695[/automerge]
Pretty sure both said that they want to be king of the pirates.
@nik87 nah, the newspaper came up with "pirate king" title. Not roger

@Garp the Fist I'm pretty sure it's "I want to be the freest on the sea"

First of all, we know this is actually what Luffy wants. He thinks pirate king means being the freest man

Second, this I ridiculous enough to cause such reactions. You can find it funny or ridiculous r inspiring depending on who you are
