This thread is kinda dumb cause whitebeard was never looking to be the WSM. He’s the WSM because he is (well was). Same thing for Mihawk. Participants don’t have to actively try to be the best swordsmen. Mihawk was given WSS because anyone that fights primarily with a sword he’s stronger than, it’s that simple

Saying that there are no competitors is laughable, literally every pirate is competitor to Whitebeard , fact that no one managed to surpass / reach his level is another matter.
1. ) Whitebeard is not just holding WSM title he is literally called world strongest pirate by Oda himself at the beggining page of Paramount war volumes. Oda didnt write this in a manner of title like WSM but as an fact . In manga Buggy said the same that WHitebeard is strongest pirate alive. Every pirate falls into this category so therefore they are all his competitors .
He is said to be only one capable of fighting equally with Roger.
Crocodile said that there are thousands and thousand pirates at sea who were not able to beat Whitebeard and Roger.
2. ) Entire era was called Whitebeard era in manga . Chapter 573 is titled "The Name of This Era is "Whitebeard" .
3 . ) He is man said to be powerful enough to destroy the world, its not title someone gave him it was stated as fact.
So WHitebeard being called world strongest man , or king of the sea are actually said as titles but those titles are well deserved.

Not true WB was mainly wanked because he was Roger's Rival and the man who sat in front of the throne

Well it's probably because no one dared (apparently not even Morgans) to name someone WSS, WSC or WSM as long as the actual ones are around. It was stated somewhere that mihawk challenged and btfo'd swordsmen until there was no one around who had realistic chances to beat him (this technically should include shanks but let's not get into these discussions as it's off topic, so forget that I wrote this). WB was beating down challengers, like Croc, as well as kaido did, like Moria
At the end of the story we probably will have some new worlds strongests but times right now are a bit turbulent as we know. 2 yonko have fallen and tell new ones have risen within weeks.
