This is slowly becoming canon
The point of a sword fight should be two blades clashing. Leave that forcefield bs for the characters that need it like Luffy.
Keep that shit all the way away from a pure swordsman. A blade is meant to cut, why add padding to a razor sharp tool? I don't mind haki as an enhancer to sharpen the blade and even increase range but Mihawk might as well be holding a wooden broomstick in that panel.

however by defn its impossible for the conqueror haki of a weaker person to be stronger than that of a stronger person.

Mihawk simply wasn't serious against Vista. He also postponed against Don Krieg.
I don't think Mihawk clashing against Vista is indicative of any of Mihawk's stats.
Taming Yoru and forging it into Kokuto implies that he's of a considerably higher calibre than Oden. Kaido grouped Oden among the very strongest:
