Let's say Zoro worked his ass off since 3 years old. He is now 21. So his hardwork is 18 years. He will become WSS let's say, at age 22. Let's round it up to 2 decades worth of hardwork.
Mihawk age is 44. His hardwork is 4 decades worth.
Zoro will beat Mihawk soon. How can 2 decades hardworker beats 4 decades hardworker? Yes. Better talent which leads to better techniques and skills. No luck.
So, Zoro's talent is above Mihawk. Only behind Luffy Roger Oden (All have CoCting & VoaT).

Yes no point in Zoro connection to Shimotsuki , and there's no possible explanation to how they moved him to East blue
but the bait is not that his lineage is not important, it's not related to Shimotsuki, at least not entirely
Zoro is related to Kaido, who actually have a plot about hating his daughter and he call her a "son", and his daughter want to copy a man, this is Kuina story all over again
there's also many resemblance in their attacks , and both are tied to Moon/Winter as their "home" , Zoro have attacks named after both Onis and Dragons as well

Shonen mangas are all about teenagers beating and surpassing veterans with decades of training and experience. Then again most Shounen protagonists do have some super special lineage behind them. Imho I wouldn't mind if Zoro was a nobody who achieved greatness with pure will, ambition and hard work. Remember that SHs get their biggest PUs not by training, but by facing seemingly impossible situations and overcoming them. On the other hand it would be cool if Zoro did have some sort of connection to Ryuma and Shimotsuki clan because that would mean some new lore drops (and I love me some lore drops).
Either way whatever happens its a win-win for me.
