I caught up to Kingdom in 2019, meaning I’ve read this series week to week for almost 5 years now, and through 6 story arcs (End of Shukai, Kyourei bullshit, Eikyuu/Kochou, Battle of Gian, Kanpishi, and now Hango)
And I can safely say that Hango is by far the most miserable Kingdom arc to read week to week. No contest, it’s not even close. In the past I really felt like I could patiently wait for Kingdom chapters with no issue. I often never read spoilers, and sometimes I would even let 3/4 chapters all release so I could binge them all at once, and I would avoid spoilers because it just felt much more satisfying to read that way.
Not with Hango though, this shit has been utterly miserable. I think this is the first time like I’ve really felt like Hara is pulling the bait-and-switch tactic on me as a reader. In the past I really felt like each Kingdom chapter (for the most part) was worth reading by its own merits. Now I really feel like Hara is using Shibashou to bait us in, but then he keeps cutting away from the shit we want to see in favor of bullshit like a fucking Sou’Ou x Shiryou flashback. I do not fucking care Hara, and I’m probably one of the more patient Kingdom fans at least here in the western/english fandom. I’m more willing to put up with a goddamn Sou’Ou Harem flashback if the main throughline of the battle (Shibashou vs Ousen) was satisfying but it hasn’t been.
I am not a fan of Hango so far in the slightest. The entire battle has been one of three things:
1. An utter clone of the far superior Shukai Plains arc
2. Baiting and off-paneling the shit we all want to see in favor of this bullshit
3. An utter waste of Shin and Ouhon’s biggest battle to date. Hara hyped the HSU leading 30,000 men and Shin has not had one single good moment this entire arc. Neither has Ouhon.
I’m at a point where I’m ready to declare the beginning of Hango as an utter failure, the absolute worst battle Hara has ever done. Yes even worse than KokuYou Hills. Maybe I’m alone in this regard but this battle hasn’t even been remotely satisfying for me. Just a bunch of empty hype and the same baiting and switching tactics utilized by Oda and other inferior mangaka. Hara is way too good for this crap.
