I think that sometimes Gokei gets underrated or not talked about enough. Ouki praised him a lot, he killed a shit ton of Qin soldiers and even when Duke Hyou reached him, he had already thought of 50 retreating strategies. The duke was in a very bad spot there. Heck, even after Gomei's death, the other general could have rallied up the 50,000 Wei around the Duke Hyou forces, had he not been intimidated by Ouki.

This is the best explanation I have seen of why Oda completely fucked Whitebeard’s character and unintentionally ruined one of the best characters he ever wrote. It still amazes me how much Oda is a fuckup.
