Character Discussion Are Admirals>Yonkous as characters?

#24
All of the Admirals are more well-written than the Yonko. They are philosophical characters, through which Oda has been able to express much further, many concepts related to good and evil, justice, the state and it's obligations, human rights, etc.

Yonko are just pirates on a race for some treasure

As individual characters yes. Kaido's writing is very easy to dismiss if you're unaware of the Thematic storytelling of Wano, as it adds tons of context to Kaido's character and actions. Decent at most.

BM is insanely wasted potential and a walking contrivance. Shanks is still bland and unexplored. WB's writing is honestly very simple and to the point. BB's writing is also simple and to the point, but effective for OP.

Admirals are just overflowing with nuance and complexity. Yonkos overall are mostly simple.

Whitebeard is very complex. One minute he’s this macho man willing to die for his family. Next minute he lets his brother’s country get taken over by a tyrant for 20 years.

Very intricate indeed..

Blackbeard has the potential to be the best written top tier ever, but other than that it’s a blowout for the admirals

Kaido and Big Mom fell short to the hundreds of chapters worth of buildup while the admirals continue to be given nuanced characterization to this day with a promising future still in store for them.

I don't really feel like the admirals have much depth or nuance. They are just soldiers who fall to command. Some of them heavily struggling with committing atrocities (yet still committing them) is like the only thing that gives them nuance. The Yonko have more character by virtue of opposing authority.
