Alright so the first thing to note is that Rellana is Rennala’s younger twin. Duh amirite?
Well, prior to the births of Radahn/Rykard/Ranni, Rennala is the greatest sorcerer in the history of Elden Ring
by far. After Rennala, the best sorcerers in the history of Elden Ring are Azur, Lusat, and Sellen.
Azur and Lusat each discovered their own legendary sorceries (Comet Azur and Stars of Ruin respectively). Sellen also learns a legendary sorcery in the form of Founding Rain of Stars. These three are too my knowledge, the only sorcerers in the history of Elden Ring to learn and be capable of casting legendary sorceries.
Comet Azur has a minimum intelligence stat requirement of 60 intelligence. Stars of Ruin requires 43 intelligence. Founding Rain of Stars, 52.
We can gauge roughly how powerful these sorceries are supposed to be via there (in lore) high intelligence levels required to cast them. This is not just a gameplay mechanic, these sorceries are intended only for master sorcerers to be able to use in-lore.
Well.
Rennala is not only capable of casting Comet Azur, Comet Azur isn’t even her most powerful sorcery. Rennala’s most powerful sorcery is Rennala’s Full Moon, a signature sorcery she developed herself.
Rennala’s Full Moon has a minimum intelligence requirement of
70. Meaning her sorcery is factually more difficult to cast than Comet Azur or any legendary sorcery, or even any other sorcery in the base game. I would also easily argue that RFM is intended to be a superior sorcery to Comet Azur in lore but that discussion is neither here nor there.
Which this makes sense, Rennala is a demigod, which means she (and spoiler alert, her children) were just destined to outright be more powerful than even the most powerful “mortal” sorcerers in history. I do think the demigod title is somewhat political, IE Rennala becomes a Demigod only when Radagon’s political marriage to Marika is arranged, but to a certain extent being a Demigod is also about your power level too…anyway.
Now controversial statement, I actually don’t think Radahn surpassed Rennala as a sorcerer. I think Radahn’s sorcery far exceeds the
scale of Rennala’s sorcery, but in terms of complexity Radahn’s sorceries are pretty middle-of-the-road. Now you can make mid tier or even low tier sorceries incredibly powerful in-lore depending on your intelligence levels, but at least in terms of the complexity of his sorceries, Radahn has nothing on Rennala.
Rykard’s only known sorcery is Rykard’s Rancor, which has an intelligence requirement of 40 and a faith requirement of 18, so we can say Rykard was also intended to be a low level legendary sorcerer on top of being a skilled warrior in lore, and also later a giant snake monster.
Ranni in lore also creates her own sorceries just like Rennala and Rykard, and she creates a mirror spell to Rennala’s Full Moon, Ranni’s Dark Moon. This spell has an intelligence requirement of 68, but in lore is just an outright superior version of Rennala’s Full Moon in just about every way aside from costing more FP to cast. So in lore we can argue that Ranni is at minimum a Rennala level sorcerer or perhaps even better.
So, with all that said, how does Rellana compare to all these other sorcerers?
Well, Rellana’s Twin Moon was her own sorcery that she created when Rennala created her Full Moon spell. Rellana’s Twin Moon has a minimum intelligence requirement of
72, making it the all-time most difficult sorcery to cast in the history of Elden Ring, in lore. Rellana also casts a variety of glintblade sorceries in addition to probably also having quite high faith to utilize her fire blade. Rellana is also an excellent warrior.
So in lore, Rellana is a sorcerer on a similar level to one of the two
by-far greatest sorcerers of all time, while also being an exceptional knight herself. Ranni and Rennala were purely sorcerers, while Rellana was essentially a battle mage.
Yeah, I think they may have made Rellana a bit too powerful. I would assume Rennala is still the superior sorcerer but just to show you guys that her best sorcery is exceeded in complexity by her twin who is also a knight lol.
So yeah, I would basically argue that Messmer, like Miquella, literally has a Demigod level being in his service as Rellana is explicitly a follower of Messmer in lore. Which I think would undoubtedly make Messmer one of the more impressive Demigods (like Godwyn and Miquella-ish level).
