You are probably not familiar with "at will" employment in America. Most big tech companies have "at will" contracts, which means that an employer can terminate an employee at any time for any reason without a warning.
^^^^
very True
however In california
there is a 60 day notice for us and afterwards severance pay.

generally tho tech is a booming , very lucrative market ,and usually in established companies ( not startups /unicorn startups) ,
mass layoffs esp to engineers are typically not common.

If I understood correctly, thats not for individual termination. That applies if a group of people gets fired, which is the case for Twitter.

Yeah, even a few months back, employers were not finding good engineers. I have heard people quit jobs in the morning and get another job in the afternoon in Silicon Valley, lol. Dont know how much of it is true though.

This has been true because the economy has been growing consistently for a long time. But now that the economy is slowing down, there might be more cases like this. For example, Intel is planning mass layoffs, most of them wont be engineers though.

its a bit overblown if you are talking about in regards to any changes within the app itself
some people think it's going to be their "free speech " utopia , its not , because profitability on twitter is almost 90% through advertisements. in other words, the corporate world, most of whom will not sponsor a vile , unmoderated social media platform, will in large part control the direction of moderation on the platform . Actually I think they put a tweet out that activist are already clamping down on advertisers who are now pausing their advertisements, even though changes havent been made in moderation already which is just a sign of things to come. To the people upset at the activist , they are exercising their right to free speech, lol .

But enough of all that
that stuff doesnt matter . Here in SF where twitter is HQ'd.
Am not sure if you are aware but another reason is he plans on getting rid of a huge chunk of the workforce . Started already actually, panic for that is really real ; some engineers were fortunate to job hop months ago , others unfortunately arent and might be on the chopping block. The reality is elon got conned into buying an unprofitable product at a grossly exaggerated price and now there's a struggle to try and squeeze out profits by cutting down cost. Mass layoffs arent necessarily about individual performance , engineers typically are part of teams , which are part of orgs , and a lot of the time , a whole org or team is being deprecated. I see bootlickers online glorifying a bunch of these people losing their jobs or like its deserved cause they were banned from twitter a while back. you can tell a lot of people dont realize engineers at the company arent really moderating or participating in dumb political culture war. They build the app maintain the product, keep it reliable 24/7 and provide for their families so on that front its sad to see this takeover will spend the end of their jobs and thats a really serious thing. Its kinda crazy people I took cs classes and graduated , proud of their 4 years of hard-work getting into a company like twitter could have all that axed in the space of a couple days. Those are real lives being affected, a lot of whom have nothing to do with whatever political bullshit is going on. People should be conscious of that.
I think part of it is also because they saw "influencers" posting about their work life at the big tech companies, at least I have seen a few and the reactions to them were pretty telling.

whole point of influencing is to paint an image that is often more entertaining than reality , am more surprised people eat it up.
My day to day looks nothing like that
but it prob also would't get 10 million view on youtube so I understand why its done.

Regardless what you think about Elon Musk or Twitter that Zuckerberg empire consisting of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp is much worse, too much social media in control of one company. I tried to avoid most of this but unfortunately almost all the people in my reallife have WhatsApp, so I "need" it too.

Seriously tho, how many of you use even use FB, Inst and Twitter?

I stopped using all of that 4-5 years ago and my sanity is better than ever
Deleted twitter long ago

Have fb but never logged in since years, probably about time I delete that account too

Use inst rarely

But there's still a crapton of people who use them

First of all this isnt Elon defend or fan thread lol
Just saying why do people care so much about something thats not really their business, he bought it with his money and now everybody is mad at him
Its really weird lol
Left wingers want the censorship to keep going. They are salty because Elon bought twitter to stop it.New social medias will arise to put down meta.Hell, google should get buried too.
